It doesn’t matter how old your children are; they will always be rocked by the news of your divorce. Even adult children can be hit badly by this development as it can shock their world. They have grown up with their parents being together; it’s something they have always expected to be the case forever.
Unfortunately, some things just aren’t meant to be. This doesn’t mean that your kids have to suffer throughout the divorce. Some parents end up thinking that it’s going to be hard for them no matter what. In turn, they might do things or avoid doing things, and it makes the whole situation worse for the kids.
While no divorce will ever be amazing for your children to deal with, you can do things that make the entire situation easier to handle. Here’s what you should think about:
Avoid arguments
Naturally, if you’re getting divorced, you might have a tendency to argue with one another. In fact, it could be one of the reasons you’re actually getting divorced anyway. Still, try to avoid arguing in front of your kids. If you must argue, try doing it when nobody is around. If your kids keep seeing you both arguing and getting angry, it will obviously upset them.
This might be a tall order for some couples, but please try your best to be amicable throughout the separation process. If you argue, you just create long-lasting memories that your kids will never forget – and these aren’t the good kind of memories.
Co-operate during the legal process
A lot of couples don’t co-operate during the legal process of getting a divorce. One of you might take a long time to respond to messages, or you’re both being uncooperative when deciding on what to do. Realistically, you are only hurting your children by doing this.
Do you think your family lawyer cares if you’re dragging this out for ages? No, they’re still getting billed for each meeting, so it’s free money for them to enjoy. Do you think you’re getting one up on your partner by dragging things out? No, you’re actually just making life worse for your kids who have to deal with a long divorce instead of a quick and easy one.
It can be hard, but try to co-operate and come to quick decisions. Don’t ask for unrealistic outcomes and everything can be solved as quickly as can be. The sooner the legal process is handled, the better it is for your kids.
Ensure they have access to both parents
If your divorce is somewhat amicable, you should ensure your children have access to both of their parents. They need to know when they can see the parent they are no longer living with. What’s more, they need to know that they can contact them whenever they like.
The issue with a lot of divorces is that parents can try to turn their kids against the other parent. You really don’t want to do this. If your ex-partner is willing to still be in their lives, let them see the kids as regularly as possible. It is not good for a child to grow up without a father or mother figure. They also shouldn’t grow up not knowing their parents or believing certain things about them.
Just because you couldn’t last in a relationship, that doesn’t necessarily mean the other parent is a bad person.
Don’t drag it out
We mentioned this when talking about the legal process, but dragging out your divorce can start before this even happens. So many couples will separate from one another for years before actually going ahead with divorce proceedings.
Why? Because they don’t want to deal with all the legal mambo jumbo. They know that it can cost money to get divorced, so they stay separated. In the end, what tends to happen is one partner finds someone else. They start dating for a few years before marriage is on the cards. Now, a divorce is needed before they can legally marry this new partner.
Dragging it out and avoiding the legal process will only bring back all the pain and suffering for your kids in the future. They already had to deal with the separation, and now they have to go through the legal divorce a few years later. If you are serious about separating from your partner, start the legal process right away.
As mentioned, divorce will always be hard for your kids. These ideas and tips can make the process easier for them to handle. They’re unlikely to be laughing and happy at the news, but they should be able to process it and deal with it a lot better without long-lasting damage.
