As we’re easing out of lockdown I’ve been reflecting on how it’s been and whether it has changed my view on things at home. On the face if it, you’d think for me not much has changed – I still work one (or more) days a week at the nursing home as a Nurse, and the rest of the time I work from home as a freelance blogger.
It does make a difference however when your freedoms are curbed. I used to dread the 6 week summer holidays, having the children around full time with practically no respite. Now, it no longer bothers me because at least you get to go away on holiday, go on days out, go and visit friends, go swimming, to the library and the list goes on. When in lockdown I couldn’t take the children shopping and the best I could offer was to walk the dog in our local park.
The four walls we live in became our whole world. It still is the most part of our world. This weekend we are going to Granny’s house for an outdoor barbecue and it’s very exciting. Before lockdown the children would go 2 days a week to Granny and Grandad’s house after school and both parties are missing it terribly.
A funny thing happens when you spend more time at home, especially cooped up together. You start wanting to make home improvements! There was a huge surge in people decluttering and looking for home storage solutions during lockdown. We still have two big bags for charity shops or jumble sales to donate and I already gave two away for those bags that come through the door (what a Godsend!). Some charity shops are now open so they will be gone soon. I say make the most of it and sort through things in categories so that it’s not one big job. One day you could do clothes, the next day toys, the next beauty products and so on. Then it isn’t so hard. Take a look at my decluttering challenge for more information.
I’ve also been thinking about home improvements even more than before with us all together. We have a dodgy window upstairs and every time I look at it I think to myself I must look up about discounted windows because they end up being so expensive. I’ve been banging on about doing the living room floor for ages, but I’ve either dithered about which type of flooring I want – real wood, parquet or laminate – or I haven’t had the money. Now I’m in a financial position to go ahead, but I don’t know whether to do the dining room too considering we plan on extending the house and we aren’t sure on the configuration yet. It’s all so complicated, so nothing ends up happening!

At least I’ve done more cleaning and tidying whilst staying home more, but having the children at home all the time meant more mess, more food preparation and more washing and washing up. Now they have gone back to school again it’s eased somewhat. I still feel like chief picker-upper though, I don’t know about you!
