How to Reduce the Spread of Bacteria at the Office

With the winter coming in fast, possible double-strength flu, and COVID still making the rounds, you might want to reduce the spread of bacteria at the office. Here are a few quick tips.

Be Responsible at Your Desk

You can reduce the chance of catching colds and flu by keeping your own desk clean. Think of how many things you touch each day. Your keyboard, mouse, pens, and more. Any germs on your hands are transferred between these. And then transferred to other people when they touch something. Keeping your office chair clean is also essential since you touch it more than you think. Basic antibacterial or alcohol wipes are often enough to kill most germs.

Don’t Forget About COVID-19

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our way of working has changed a lot in the past few years. But although the worst is over, we still need to pay attention to COVID safety. COVID is still around and could come back. So, make a policy for the workplace that tells people about COVID-safe rules like keeping a safe distance, washing their hands, and disinfecting work areas and shared equipment. Small things like these can make a huge difference at work.

Reduce the Spread of Bacteria by Eating Elsewhere

If you eat at your desk, it will be more difficult to keep it clean. Also, it makes your workspace less useful than it could be. Other staff members shouldn’t have to work in a space filled with stains and germs. And the smell of food can put people off when they’re trying to work. Also, drinks are obviously dangerous around computers and other electronics. So make it a point to eat or drink in a designated cafeteria area for safety’s sake, but also simple respect for others.

Clean Co-Working Spaces After Each Use

It’s more important than ever to keep co-working spaces clean and organised. There might be germs in common co-working areas like meeting rooms. You can help prevent illness by taking care of yourself. But you can’t be responsible for what other people do. So make absolutely sure you wash your hands before using a co-working area, and clean shared spaces with antibacterial cleaner when you are done. And use hand sanitiser as often as possible.

Be an Example by Cleaning Up

When people in the office walk in and out, they track-in all kinds of bacteria on their shoes and clothing. Food or drinks like the morning coffee can also spill and spread germs. As an employee in the office, it may not be your responsibility to clean the floors. And your office will likely hire a professional cleaning service. However, you can be an example and promptly clean up spillages to avoid someone slipping and empty bins to prevent bacteria from spreading.

Summary

For safety alone and to ensure limited employee illness, take steps to reduce the spread of bacteria at work. Keep your desk clean, eat in a designated space and keep floors clean. Small but simple acts like this can help prevent some of the worst kinds of bacteria from spreading.
