You know you’re an on call Midwife when

Sharing is caring!

  • You have enough equipment in your car to set up a small field hospital

  • You can’t decide whether to stay up late to avoid being dragged out of bed or go to bed at 6pm to cram in as much sleep as possible before that 2am wake-up call

  • You hate your work phone’s ring tone with its oh-so-jolly tune because you know what it means…

  • …and you keep imagining that you hear it!

  • You don’t cook or eat anything special because if you get interrupted you don’t want it to go to waste

  • Your glass of wine is unfortunately absent

  • You go to sleep with a diary and pen by your bed

  • You wake up, check your phone, try to get back to sleep and it rings

  • There’s a sense of excitement and dread when you go out on the call

  • Your partner is used to fending for himself

  • You reach new levels of tiredness

  • You’re used to a placenta being in your car…

  • …and it doesn’t bother you in the slightest to eat a Macdonald’s breakfast sitting next to it

This is meant to be a tongue in cheek list, are you a Midwife or Doula? Have you got anything you would add?  Share if you agree!

Interesting insight into the life of a midwife! It must be frustrating to never dare start anything in case you get called away! The placenta comments made me laugh 🙂 #TheList

Your kids know to plan their weekend activities based on whether you’re on call or off call.

You go to a movie with your significant other but you each take your own car.

Every time you leave the house you have a mental plan in case you don’t come home for 24 hours.

Ahaha this made me giggle! My midwife was wonderful and told us so many stories about being called out in the middle of the night to the most obscure of places, she was such a laugh, I guess this post reminded me of her!

I really enjoyed reading this 🙂

Haha this is so true, especially eating a breakfast next to the placenta!

Nothing quite like the smell of a placenta to accompany a sunrise.
