A Review of Learner.com
If you have a child who’s struggling in maths, I can relate. A few weeks ago, my son was completely stressed out. I didn’t know what to do or where to turn. Finally, I called Learner, a maths tutoring program.
Let me tell you, it was the right choice.
But first, a little background…
…So you can fully understand why I highly recommend Learner for maths tutoring services.
William is a smart kid. He’s in his first year of secondary school, and his grades have been above average in all his classes… except maths, of course. He’s currently learning Algebra. And, until recently, he was barely keeping up with the class.
William is also in the school running club. It’s really important to him. But he started getting super worried that his poor performance in algebra would cause him to be denied the privilege of running. And really, he was right to be worried. If he continued to struggle he might not be allowed to participate in school sports.
Besides worrying myself about William, seeing him stress to this level was especially concerning to me. It was beginning to really affect his mood. He was becoming a ball of stress and grumpiness.
That’s when I decided to look for help.
I searched around online and found plenty of online maths tutoring programs. It was tricky to know which one to go with at first—many of them looked quite reputable and seemed to have generally good reviews.
Ultimately, we decided to give Learner a try.
That’s because, after looking through the options and weighing the pros and cons, Learner began to stand out for a few particular reasons:
- They hand-select a tutor for each student based on what they learn about that student. Not just their particular struggles in maths, but also their personality and learning style, which I thought was pretty cool and insightful of them.
- They use an original platform setup that allows student and tutor, while on their video call, to collaborate on maths problems together on the screen. It also works across multiple devices, which sounded extremely convenient.
- Learner records each session so it can be reviewed later. They also send regular feedback to both student and parents. I liked the ideas that they want to make it easy for us (student, parents, and tutor) to all be in the know on his progress.
- They offer a free first session, just to ensure total satisfaction with their service, before moving on with paid sessions. Who doesn’t love free stuff, right?
I figured Learner was worth a shot, especially knowing that I wouldn’t have to pay anything at first to get a feel for how the sessions would go.
So I made the call.
I chatted with their academic coach about William’s challenges in maths. He asked several questions to get a full picture of William—both as a student, and just as a person. He also walked me through some of the steps for how the process would go.
The call was laid back, but also quite thorough—in the coach’s learning about my son, and in his laying out for me the step-by-step explanation for using Learner’s tutoring service.
After our initial call, the coach “prescribed,” if you will, a tutor based on William’s style of learning and specific maths needs. And we scheduled his first appointment.
My son’s first session went incredibly well.
It was like a weight was lifted off William’s shoulders. During his session, my husband and I may have eavesdropped a little from the other room (shhh), and we heard his high level of engagement. He was really listening, participating, and starting to more solidly grasp the concepts they’re covering in school.
Of course, we decided to continue with Learner—it is definitely worth paying for. William is so relieved to have found a solution to his confusion in algebra. And finally have all that frustration and worry eliminated. He’s actually started to seem kind of excited for his tutoring lessons, because I think he can see how effectively it’s helping him.
After 6 weeks of lessons with his Learner tutor, my son’s now getting higher marks in maths. Not only that, but his confidence and upbeat attitude have returned.
And he’s more fully enjoying his running again—because he no longer has the worry hanging over his head that he’ll be pulled from the team. In fact, he’s really thriving in the sport.
William (and I) could not be more thankful to Learner.
Their program has been such a huge help to him—he just gets it now. And, he couldn’t be more thankful to me for finding Learner. (I know, it’s a rare moment the mum of a teenage boy is the recipient of gratitude. I’m one lucky mum)
After using the platform, our favorite features turned out to be:
- William’s assigned tutor. She was awesome. Just down-to-earth, relatable, and explained new concepts clearly. She worked at his pace, which finally allowed him to catch up with the rest of his class.
- The recorded sessions. Alex was so glad to be able to go back and watch his lessons again. Often, during the lessons, he would feel like he was getting it—but then afterward, while working on assignments, he’d get confused again and couldn’t remember what his tutor had explained. Learner made it so easy for him to just go back and watch the video so he could re-learn those trickier concepts. No more getting stuck and frustrated with homework.
