A growing number of women are choosing to be their own boss. Becoming a parent can make life more difficult when it comes to running a household and balancing work and pleasure, but being a business owner has its benefits. If you work for yourself, you have more control and you don’t have to answer to anyone else. Nevertheless, it can be challenging to juggle multiple balls. If you’re a mum and you’re on a mission to strike a better work-life balance, here are some tips and tricks to try.
Establish a work routine
Every parent will be familiar with the importance of routine. Sadly, most devote all their time and energy into getting their children into a regime, and this means that they neglect their own schedule. As a business owner and a working parent, it’s incredibly beneficial to try and establish working patterns. If you can plan your weeks and months based on childcare commitments and you know when you’re going to be working each day, this will help you increase productivity without sacrificing family time.
Try to apply the same rules to working hours as you would if you were based at an office. Many people who work from home tend to spend more time at their desks, and this is not always a positive trait. Set your working hours, stick to them and start the day with a to-do list. It’s important to give yourself time out and to play to your strengths. If you’re a morning person, starting early will enable you to get more done.
Embrace smart working and technology
Technology has undoubtedly revolutionised the way we work, and for entrepreneurs, it can save a huge amount of time and effort. Take solutions like video calls that eliminate the need to travel to face-to-face meetings and programmes and software like digital asset management that enable you to access, store and share files and content in an instant. You can also take advantage of automated features, which will save you time when creating documents, responding to queries and processing orders. Investing in technology can improve efficiency and enable you to work smarter. This means that you achieve more in a shorter space of time. Take a look at the tools and equipment you’re using at the moment, note down any problems or obstacles you encounter on a regular basis and do some research to see what kinds of systems, gadgets and programmes could help you drive your business forward.
Work with others
Managing a business involves spinning several plates. It’s highly likely that even the most impressive entrepreneur will stumble across tasks or challenges that don’t match their skill set. If you’re attempting tasks that are beyond your level of experience or training, for example, or you want to focus on elements that are not directly linked to your skills and talents, it’s wise to work with others. If you run an e-commerce store, for example, you might be brilliant at communicating with customers, designing products and sourcing items that appeal to your target buyer, but you might not have expertise in social media marketing or search engine optimisation. If you’re a therapist or a business development consultant, you may need help with accounting or branding. You can outsource jobs to external agencies or work with freelancers to avoid adding to your wage bill on a permanent basis.
Saving time outside of work
Finding the right balance between parenting and working is not solely dependent on running an efficient business. There are also ways of saving time outside of your work schedule. Managing your diary more effectively and taking steps to lighten the load can help. Even simple strategies like having your grocery shop delivered and asking a parent, sibling, neighbour or friend to help out with school runs a couple of times a week can make a huge difference. It’s also beneficial to learn to say no sometimes. Many of us feel like we’re inundated with requests, and there’s pressure to say yes all the time. If you’re already busy and you want to spend more quality time with your family, don’t be afraid to turn down the odd invitation for a playdate or a networking event. You can’t be in two places at once.
