Disclosure: collaborative post
As soon as I had a daughter (and sons, but particularly a daughter), I couldn’t wait to take her to the theatre and to musicals. I have such fond memories as a child of going to the theatre in London with my Mum and Granny. For birthdays and just general treats, my Granny would pay for us all to go as a family to a musical. Nowadays it needn’t be so expensive, especially with lots of ticket deal sites.
I would love to go and take my children to some of the same shows I went to and some new ones that have since come along. Here’s my musicals bucket list, see if you have been to any and if you have some of the same on your list.
Phantom of the opera
I saw this originally with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford and it was mesmerising. More than that, I had the soundtrack on tape and I’ve listened to it so many times, it’s so moving.
Cats
I’ve seen this show twice, once as a child with Wayne Sleep in it, he put his head on my lap as a three year old. My parents called me Grizabella afterwards – I guess I used to whinge a lot?! Me, never.
Mamma Mia
I am and always will be a die hard Abba fan, I saw this with my Mum and it was wonderful, we all sang along.
The little shop of horrors
A little bit scary, a little bit strange, funny and more, it’s great with kids. I remember the fronds dropping from the ceiling at the end. I wonder if they still do that in the theatre or whether health and safety have stopped it?
Wicked
A more recent musical, I went with my Mother in Law and two sister-in-laws. The songs aren’t as strong as some of the other musicals here but I loved the story and of course defying gravity is a winner.
Matilda
Phoebe loves Matilda, both the film and the book, she has a battered copy of the book in her bedroom and I often find her watching the film over and over. I’d love to take her to see it, it’s currently on at The Cambridge Theatre.
Miss Saigon
One of my top shows, I saw this with a friend when I was in university, it’s so sad, especially as it’s based on true stories of the time. I also have the soundtrack and it’s such beautiful music.
Oliver
I’ve seen this a couple of times and I think it is a brilliant one to take the kids too. It’s relatable and has enough drama to keep them entertained.
That’s my top list to take the children to, I think some of them will be better when the children are older, and some I will revisit just for me. What’s your favourite musical?
