Becoming a parent is a beautiful experience, but it is also very overwhelming. Almost every other mum out there is going to try to give you advice. So here is a handy guide of a few tips from a Mum of three to get you started and to provide you with some confidence for this fantastic new role.
Keeping calm can be difficult when your baby cries a lot, and you don’t know what to do to fix it and want to find out what is bothering them, or you lose your cool because you feel like every new day with your child or children is about keeping calm and not losing your temper. Many mums out there have been trying jewelry for essential oils and found it very useful as it is not a calming pill or anything of that sort, it is natural and it’s jewelry that calms you down and does not affect your breastfeeding.
Understanding Different Cries
Learning what your baby needs and wants takes time, so it is entirely understandable that you feel helpless when your new baby starts crying as a new mom, especially if it is for the millionth time that day, and you have no idea why. You do not have the nerves of a bomb squad pro to endure the long nights which are required while feeding a newborn.
Do not feel that your baby is crying every time because they are sad or distressed just because it is how we feel when we cry. Babies cry to communicate all sorts of feelings, such as being tired, cold, wet, bored, hungry, or even when they are overstimulated. So do not always let the assumption of something being wrong overrule your thinking, crying is just your baby’s way of “talking” to you. If you do start to feel like something is wrong, you can take him or her for a visit to a pediatrician to be safe
Teaching your Baby to Self-soothe
It can be extremely unnerving when your newborn is crying, although it is essential to understand it is okay if you cannot respond right away. Developing the habit of continually picking your baby up if it is crying will only lead to a demanding baby. Most mums had found that when they left their baby to cry for a little to take some time to calm themselves, their babies stopped crying. We’re not talking about leaving them to cry it out, but that few minutes time out for you both can work wonders.
Believe it or not, your stress will only fuel your baby’s fire. If you have fed the baby, bathed or changed the baby, and you are sure that your baby is crying for no reason, some parents allow the baby to self-soothe. It’s not for everyone, but some people find it is best for them. Others go for a controlled approach, going in to soothe at regular intervals until the baby goes to sleep. Others find co-sleeping works best for them. There’s no right or wrong.
Many mothers who have gotten this right and have undergone the frequent-feeding stages can sleep-train their babies, which has given them the luxury of sleeping through the night. It is possible, by following a rigorous routine.
Relying on Routine
Once you and your baby develop a routine, you would be able to know why they are crying. Great ways to keep routines are to set alarms for each of the scheduled feedings, bathing, naps and playtimes. Do not feel ashamed if you have to go out for the day, and it is your baby’s nap time, and you have to reprimand someone from picking your baby up, as it will disturb the routine that you have worked so hard to set. The only time where routine may accommodate changes will be during teething, growth spurts, and specific developmental milestones, as your baby will be hungrier than usual or feel the need to sleep more.
Allowing Yourself to Have Negative Feelings
Everyone thinks the only feelings new mothers or parents should overflow with are love and joy and then end up feeling bad that they do not and put themselves down or feel like they do not have what it takes out to be a parent. But being a mom is arduous work. Almost every mom out there feels some level of ambivalence towards her all-consuming responsibilities.
You must know that there is no condemnation on experiencing the ‘baby blues’; what matters is how you respond to that emotion. Feeling a little down after having a baby is not a reason to scold yourself; you are not any less a mother for feeling this way. Be gracious towards yourself as you embark on this wonderful journey of motherhood. The best advice that we can offer is not to hesitate to ask for help and take the daily journey one step at a time.
