The Role Nutrition Plays During Recovery

Recovery from addiction requires you to be emotionally and mentally healthy but also physically healthy. Besides going to the gym to keep fit, the food you eat assists in improving your health. Alcohol and substance abuse do a lot of harm to your body. As an addict, you don’t eat well; you damage your gut so your body cannot absorb enough nutrients. Vomiting and diarrhea while on drugs also contribute to the unhealthy nature of addicts. Also, drugs like marijuana give you cravings for sweet foods and junk which can lead to unhealthy weight gain. The right diet will help your body regain its strength during recovery.

Nutritional Tips During Recovery

Research has shown that recovering addicts with unhealthy eating habits are more likely to relapse. The lifestyle of a recovering addict must change drastically to improve healing of both the mind and body. Recovering addicts who don’t eat well also slow down the healing process of physical wounds. Addicts are advised to go on a diet if possible, to help their body recover.

Additionally, addicts are advised to introduce different types of food slowly as they go. This is because the body during detoxification is not used to digesting food, at least not in the beginning. Also, oxycontin users rarely have an appetite, so it is best to start with foods that the recovering addict likes. Patients who are prescribed for oxytocin should be warned of the loss of appetite or given multivitamin supplements to help improve their eating. In case of wrongful death, you can get an oxycontin wrongful death attorney to prove negligence on the doctor’s side.

Some nutritional tips include; Drinking lots of water, reduce eating sugary foods and sweets, eat a lot of carbohydrates and moderate protein, make healthier junk food choices if you must eat junk food, avoid skipping meals and never miss breakfast, eat foods that are high in roughage, consult a nutritionist or dietician, do some exercise, for example, yoga or go to the gym, only use supplements recommended by the doctor, find new ways of dealing with stress and anxiety.

Role of Nutrition

Food plays a significant role in how we feel. Food gives us energy, improves our brain function, immune system, and restores damaged tissue, among other benefits. Additionally, nutrition plays a vital role in mood. Food affects our body, both chemically and physiologically. This means that diet can affect our behavior either positively or negatively. It is common for recovering addicts to experience anxiety and mood swings. Science has shown that some foods aid in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that enhances mood.

While nutrition is an integral part of the recovery process, food should not be used as a coping mechanism. Addicts must be educated on nutritional matters while in rehab and after they leave. It also helps to partner or seek support from recovery centers during this time. There are several drug abuse recovery centers that provide nutritional health support for free for recovering addicts.
