I know we’re in the middle of summer now and the thought of a radiator is far from your mind, but the cold weather isn’t that far away, are you ready for it? Before we changed our boiler over I used to feel the dread – would it fire up again OK after the summer? Thankfully it did! I’m also intrigued by all things smart controlled, I now have a smart controlled thermostat that I can control from my phone. Now that you’re expecting, or have a small baby, you need to get the temperature of their room (and yours) exactly right.
What is the optimal room temperature for your baby’s nursery?
Babies under 6 months should be sharing your room, but they may sleep in the nursery during the day, and the same rules apply for your bedroom.
So to clarify, keep the room where baby is sleeping between 16-20 degrees Celsius, with 18 degrees (65 Fahrenheit) being the ideal. Try not to freak out about it though, in hot weather it’s difficult to keep the temperature down – keeping a window open, a fan circulating air and minimal clothing can help. Never put a fan directly over the baby. Keep a room thermometer in the bedroom so you can monitor temperature fluctuations. A lot of parents like the colour changing Groegg thermometer, but any room thermometer that has an easy display works well.
The aim is for the baby to be wearing light clothing and minimal bedclothes, or a light sleeping bag once they are big enough. People often unintentionally over heat their babies, putting them at greater risk of SIDS.
