It’s no secret that many family homes have a games console like the Sony PS5, Microsoft Xbox Series S, or the Nintendo Switch. They undeniably allow youngsters and adults alike to have hours of fun playing all kinds of games, either alone or with friends and family online.
The thing is, desktop PCs will always trump games consoles. If you’re undecided whether to spend your money buying a new games console for your family to use or not, it’s worth putting serious thought into buying a PC. Here’s why:
PCs Are Upgradeable
Perhaps one of the biggest facts about desktop computers is you can always upgrade them. As with games consoles, the hardware specifications on PCs get improved all the time. For example, you could upgrade your sim racing PC to a spec that includes more RAM, an SSD (solid-state drive) and a beefier graphics card. There is very little expansion you can do to a games console, mainly because all the hardware used is proprietary.
PCs Aren’t Just for Gaming
Of course, buying a PC for gaming doesn’t mean it’s the only thing you can do with it. Games are awesome, especially if you get really involved in the game and end up immersed in the universe, like with diablo 2 runewords, for example, but it’s not the only thing you can do with your PC. If you purchase or build a gaming PC, you can use it for graphics design and illustration, CAD (computer-aided design), and video editing.

In contrast, you can’t use a games console for work purposes, even if you used it with a wireless keyboard and mouse. It’s just like trying to use an agricultural tractor for grocery shopping; you just wouldn’t do that, and you’d use a car instead!
PCs Are Cheap to Repair
If the DVD drive in your computer stops working, you can replace it with a brand new one that costs less than a meal from your local takeaway establishment. When the same thing happens in a games console, you can expect to pay a lot of money for the repair.
What’s more, games consoles don’t have the same standardised hardware architecture as PCs. Open up any PC, and you’ll immediately know where the hard drive, RAM, or power supply unit is inside the case.
Opening up a games console is a challenge in itself because you have to navigate your way around anti-tamper screws and know how to disassemble and reassemble everything. Even if you opened one up successfully, there are few parts you can replace at home.
Most games console repairs will have to be conducted by a specialist, whereas anyone can undertake PC repairs at home competent with basic knowledge of how PCs work.
