One of the biggest shocks you could ever have in life is an unplanned pregnancy. It doesn’t matter where you are in life, whether you have three children already or whether or not you are in the middle of studying for a masters. Getting pregnant when you didn’t intend to be pregnant is a shock to the system. But there really isn’t a reason to panic because we are fortunate enough to live in a time where, in most places, you have choices ahead of you.

You can choose to embrace the shock and continue with the pregnancy. You can choose to get abortion pills by post. You could even choose to embrace the pregnancy and intend to give the baby up for adoption in the end.You don’t have to be left in a position where you are stuck with a pregnancy you didn’t want. The best parents are the ones that choose to be pregnant, and the best parents are the ones that choose for them to have a future with a family. If you are choosing to continue with the pregnancy, then congratulations. Here are some of the things that you should do now that you know you’re pregnant.

  1. Give your doctor a call. It’s so important to see your doctor so that they can help you to figure out how far along your pregnancy is. Even if you know the exact date of your last period, it doesn’t mean you know exactly when you fell pregnant or ovulated. If you’re not going to be keeping the baby, that’s absolutely fine. Seeing your doctor is the next best thing to do because they can help you to go through the process of an abortion or adoption. Getting your healthcare provider’s support is so important, but if you do live in a state where this could be volatile for you, then maybe you need to go on vacation.
  2. Start taking prenatals. If you intend to keep the pregnancy regardless of the shock, then you do need to take prenatal vitamins from now on. It should have at least 400 micrograms of folic acid as this reduces the risk of brain, spine and spinal cord defects in babies. You need to make sure that you have it in your system as early as possible in your pregnancy, so from the moment you find out you’re expecting. This is the right time to start if you weren’t planning it.
  3. Give up the bad habits. Smokers should quit, drinkers should quit, and drug users should seek some help to quit. All three are very harmful to your baby, and if you’re planning on going through this pregnancy to be in the best possible health, then your baby deserves that too.
  4. Take good care of yourself. If you have the means to access a therapist, please do so. Pregnancies can be a shock. You have to remember that this is something that’s taking over your body, and if you didn’t intend for it to happen, that can take a lot of your own autonomy away from you. A social worker or a psychologist can help walk you through the process of being strong through pregnancy or being strong through an abortion.
