Protecting your baby in the sun

Sharing is caring!

I know we all joke about the British summers, but in truth we need to remember to protect our children even when the sun isn’t blazing down all day. With skin cancer on the rise, it’s now more important than ever to protect them from damaging UV rays.

Frezyderm sent me their Baby sun care, SPF 25 to try. My husband and I are very pale and burn easily, with his skin being very freckly. We’ve had a case of skin cancer in the family too, so we’re always ultra careful in the sun.

What we thought of the baby sun care

This cream is non greasy and easily absorbed. It contains no parabens, colour or fragrance. I do like a fragrance sometimes, it’s quite nice when it reminds you of summer, beach and far away lands! If you like it all natural, then this is a good one to go for. It claims to use only natural blockers, but I don’t know which of the ingredients that pertains to, so here’s the list:

“Aqua, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Titanium Dioxide (Nano), Zinc oxide (nano), Isononyl Isononanoate, Biosaccharide Gum-4, Glyverin, Isohexadecane, Helianthus Annus Seed Oil, PEG-30 Di-polyhydroxystearate, Cetyl Dimethicone, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Hexyl Laurate, Cerium Dioxide, Dicaaprylyl Carbonate, Alumina, C30-45 Alkyl Methicone, Polyhydroxystearic acid, Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Cera Alba, Glycine Soja oil, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Tocopherol, Methicone, Caprylyl Glycol, Dihydromyrcenol, Silica, Cyclohexasiloxane, Cyclopentasiloxane, C18-70 Isoparaffin, C30-45 Olefin, PEG-5 Pentaerythrityl Ether, PPG-5 Pentaerythirityl Ether, Triethoxycaprylsilane, Magnesium Sulfate, Propylene Carbonate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol.”

Phew! A long list, I don’t understand most of it, but it contains vitamin E and Panthenol, and shields cells’ DNA and protects from free radicals according to the information and is speciallly formulated for a baby’s sensitive skin. It’s also waterproof, something I always look for, there’s nothing worse than constantly worrying about re-applying, although if you’re in the sun all day, you should re-apply after a couple of hours. It’s ideal for babies and children as well as those who have a genetic predisposition for eczema or are intolerant to organic sun filters.

What you need to know to protect your baby from harmful UV rays

According to Frezyderm, there are 5 mistakes that are commonly made when thinking about Baby sun care:

  • Only applying sun cream outdoors – it needs time to soak into the skin
  • Letting newborns face direct sunlight (for vitamin D) – they get enough through breastmilk or formula
  • Only wearing sunscreen on bright days – UV rays penetrate through the clouds
  • Not giving your baby sunglasses – they need eye protection too
  • Using a low SPF – at least SPF 25 should be used

So take care in the sun, and remember to always use sunscreen (with at least SPF 25), a hat and sunglasses. Cool dudes rule!
