As much as we try to convince ourselves and everyone else that we’re not that materialistic, we all have the occasional fantasy of being millionaires, and living in a gorgeous country manor with more space than we know what to do with. You may have felt pretty great when you moved into your home, but as we have kids and fill it with things we think we need, anywhere can end up feeling a little cramped. Here are some of my best tips for expanding your living space.
Go Outside
If you’ve been struggling to come up with any ideas to expand your living space, it may be due to you totally neglecting the garden. I know that Britain isn’t exactly the hottest nation on earth, but expanding out of the house can be a great way to give yourself a little more living space. If you’ve got some useless, empty space in your garden, like so many of us do, think about using it. A premade solid gazebo, along with some decking and seats, can be a wonderful addition to your home, especially when summer rolls around again. There’s a range of options and prices for this, but a decent set-up is going to be much more affordable than any kitchen extension ideas you may have! Just make sure that any furniture you get is mildew-resistant.
Store and Organize

If you went to uni, then you may have some clear memories of being extremely strapped for cash, using a plastic crate for both a chair and a storage box in a tiny shoebox of a room. Though you don’t have to go quite so bohemian, it may be helpful to re-acquaint yourself with this sort of mentality. One great way of maximising space is getting furniture which doubles as storage, such as beds and tables with built-in drawers, or ottomans and pouffes which open up. An even more budget-friendly improvement would simply be adding more shelves. This is an especially smart move if you find that your floor space is too cramped. Loads of people neglect all the vertical space in their home; make sure you’re not one of them!
Get Rooms to Multi-Task
Houses may be listed by the number of bedrooms, but you’re the owner now, so it’s up to you how many bedrooms there are! Making rooms serve multiple purposes is a fantastically simple way to make the most of your available space. With things like laptops, printers and other electronics being so small these days, making rooms more versatile is easier than it’s ever been. It’s great to have an office if you’re working from home. However, if you could do the work just as easily in the conservatory, why not move your computer and give the old office to one of your kids? If you’ve got a place you call the “dining room”, but you haven’t eaten a meal in there for years, think about selling that huge table and converting it into something else. With a little imagination, all kinds of possibilities can open up!
