Diamonds can be a minefield. Some people rip you off. Perhaps you’re worried about wasting money. Sometimes the number of choices that are available are enough to send you running in the opposite direction. This is where out of the box thinking comes in, like buying an un-set, loose diamond from one of the multitude of vendors online. Here’s how to pick the right on for that special person.

Given the selection out there, finding the right one could feel like a massive task, particularly if your expectations are based on a jewellery store, where selections are far more limited. Every diamond search is unique, so use this guide to help you find the best place to start, and make a success out of your endeavor.

I’m often reminded about how difficult it is for people to juggle all the information they have to deal with when looking for a cheap but beautiful engagement ring.  they need to figure out whether  they have been ripped off or whether they have found a bargain. Doing the diamond search on your own can be very difficult, and doing it without a sounding board can be even harder. Don’t be scared to ask professional jeweller for advice if you’re feeling stuck.

If you know someone who was in the market for receiving diamonds as gifts, they are probably familiar with the stone, and as such will already have existing shape preferences. Especially when it comes to engagement diamonds, it is of paramount importance to pick a stone that is to the wearer’s taste.

Choose well

The process of choosing the right diamond, from a cheap engagement ring all the way through to the expensive stuff, is made much easier if you are able to define the exact shape of that you prefer.

Going around and round

Unless the person to whom you are looking to give the diamond has shown interest in a specific shape, always choose a round diamond. The reason for this is that round diamonds show more brilliance than most other shapes, the shape works well in most settings, and round diamonds are timeless classics.

When you move into fancy diamond territory, length to width ratio makes a big difference. This allows you to see the difference between diamonds and similar shapes much easier, such as square vs rectangular. If you are at the beginner phases of your interactions with diamonds and not sure what you actually prefer, go for a shape you are drawn to and then look at diamonds using length to width ratios within that shape category until you encounter one you like.

A weighty issue

If your prospective spouse is expecting a 1 or 2-carat diamond, but that falls outside of your budget, you have some thinking to do. Perhaps you would be better advised to choose a stone which is significant and visible but of a lower carat weight range. With carat price comes a cost, so the lower you can keep your carats, the better for your pocket If you really can’t afford a ring, maybe she’d like a gold necklace instead?
