Becoming a new parent is an experience that can totally transform a person’s life for the better, and enrich their existence in a huge variety of ways.
At the same time, however, becoming a new parent is also a jump into the unknown, and a journey into a world of responsibility that has no real parallel with anything else.
It’s not uncommon, for that reason, to find that many new parents struggle with stress and a sense of overwhelm, while at the same time being overjoyed at the new phase of their life that they have entered.
As with all other seasons and dimensions of a person’s life – self-care is very important for new parents. While it will, of course, be natural and right for your first priority to be your baby, you should still do what you can to ensure that you are safeguarding your own health and well-being, too.
Here are just a few tips for effective self-care as a new parent.
1. Plan for your own comfort and well-being in advance where possible
As a new parent, it is normal that you will find yourself rushed off your feet, more or less constantly. There will undoubtedly be many chores, duties, and obligations that need to be attended to – and this can sometimes make it difficult to arrange things on the fly with regards to self-care.
One habit that you should aim to develop, therefore, is to plan for your own comfort and well-being in advance wherever possible – with the help of your partner, family, and close friends as and when possible and necessary.
One good example of this is to create a newborn hospital checklist before you actually go into labour, so that you can be as prepared as possible for welcoming your new baby into the world, and dealing with the time you will both spend in the hospital.
It’s also a great idea to have travel bags arranged and prepared on standby, in addition to making arrangements in advance for things like postnatal classes and exercises, and so on.
Take the opportunity to plan for your own comfort and well-being – in addition to that of your child – in advance, wherever possible.
2. Seek support and advice from trusted people who have been there before
As a first-time parent, you are naturally likely to feel disoriented and daunted some degree, due to the simple fact that you are treading new and unfamiliar territory, without a clear “roadmap” or a sense of how to deal with the various responsibilities that will come your way.
In order to ensure that things are “smooth sailing” as much as possible – and to reduce your own stress and concerns as well – make a point of seeking support and advice from trusted people who have been there before.
For many people, this might mean turning to their own parents and grandparents for advice and insight. For others, it will mean consulting with siblings, or friends who have already had children of their own. Using Toddle can help parents to find the most suitable care for their little ones.
Even if none of the above-mentioned scenarios are feasible for you, you will be able to find guides, parenting books and magazines, and instructional videos that can help you to benefit more or less directly from the knowledge and insights of others, so that you don’t have to feel as though you are going it entirely alone.
3. Find opportunities for a bit of leisure and escapism on a regular basis (even if only in small doses)
With a new baby in the household, you’ll obviously be busy and preoccupied with the well-being of your baby for much of your time on a daily basis.
Since being a parent is such a significant responsibility, it might be that the very idea of enjoying “leisure time” makes you feel uncomfortable, and as if you are being lazy or complacent.
Nonetheless, it’s important for you to find opportunities for a bit of leisure and escapism on a regular basis – fitted in, of course, around and in between your more pressing obligations as a parent.
Research has found that people who grant themselves regular opportunities for leisure are happier and more productive in a professional context – and it will almost certainly be the case that you’ll also feel a greater sense of well-being, balance, and resilience as a parent, if you are able to “let your hair down” from time to time.
Even just small moments of leisure and escapism during the day can make a world of difference. So, why not pick a good novel to read in those free moments that present themselves to you?
4. Do what you can to stay well fed, and to make sure that you are getting enough of the right nutrients
Very often in life, we tend to sacrifice the quality of our nutrition almost immediately when pressing responsibilities arise, or when tense or potentially stressful scenarios arise.
Undereating – or becoming deficient in essential nutrients (something which is already remarkably common) – however, can significantly harm your health, your sense of well-being, your energy levels, and more.
It can also lead to chronically elevated stress levels, and can get in the way of not only your happiness, but also your effectiveness as a parent.
It’s understandable if you find that you don’t have much time for preparing creative gourmet meals for yourself three times a day as a new parent. But there are workarounds that you should certainly consider exploring – such as using a slow cooker to batch cook nutritious meals for yourself, with minimal effort, and taking well-balanced vitamin supplements.
5. Look for a new-parent-friendly social circle
If your current friend circle doesn’t feature any – or many – parents, you might find that you are suddenly out of step. Subsequently, you may feel that your social life suffers, as you don’t have the time or desire to frequent your previous haunts.
All the same, social interaction is important for everyone, on a deep level.
A good prospective workaround here is to look for a new-parent-friendly social circle to supplement your existing social life. Brunches or playgroups with other parents and babies might be a welcome addition to your schedule.
