If you’re expecting, or you’re about to relocate your baby to their own room, you may be looking for ideas for your nursery. If you don’t know whether you’re having a boy or a girl, it’s always best to go for neutral colours. If you do know the sex, you can be a bit more adventurous with shades and accessories. Nurseries should be peaceful and calm and lighter colours are often recommended. You don’t have to go all-out with the beige, but keep things understated. Avoid clashing colours and too many prints.
Once you’ve decided on a colour for the walls, you can start thinking about accessories. Wooden bookshelves, wall units and changing stations work well with white or cream walls. If you’re after something a little more modern, white furniture and polished wooden floors look great together. Add lamps, floor cushions and wall art to inject some colour and personality. Personalised prints, which feature your baby’s name, birthdate and weight, are a lovely touch. Add a rocking horse, a vintage chair or a large teddy bear to finish the room in style.

Inspiration for toddler’s rooms
If time has flown by and your little baby is now an adventurous toddler like mine, it’s time to give your nursery a revamp. Create a feature wall using a bright colour, printed paper or wall stickers. Think about what your child likes to do in their spare time, or their favourite characters from books or films. Animals, space, football and Disney are all popular themes for young kids. Make your child’s room unique with personalised artwork and quirky design features. Turn an old wardrobe into a castle, or add some drama to a princess bed with draped material. Search sites like Love The Sign on the Internet for inspiration, and don’t forget storage. Look for solutions, which will enable you to tidy up and de-clutter in an instant.

Hints for older children
When your children have grown out of toddler trends, and they’re after something more grown up, it can be tricky to pitch the design at the right level. You want it to look like a child’s room, but you don’t want it to be too babyish. If you have girls, you can use quilted patterns, sorbet shades and bunting to create a traditional look. Or opt for pastel colours and metallics, a dressing table and a four-poster bed for a modern, romantic look. If you have boys, channel their interests and create a room fit for a sports fan or a rock star retreat. Use accents, such as framed shirts and guitars hanging from the walls, to keep things subtle.

Children grow up fast and before you know it, they’ve outgrown their nursery and they’ve got their own design ideas. Take your child’s ideas on board, look for inspiration in magazines and websites, and have fun. Use colours, prints and themes. If you don’t want to blow the budget, take advantage of accessories. You can change the look of a room with the help of a few simple accents here and there.
