If you linger in any living room that has a decent amount of furniture in it, then it’s highly likely you are very close to an angle iron. If you enter a building, you’re probably within feet of an angle iron as well. You may not know what they are if you are not someone who does many DIY projects, but angle irons are there, and they are probably composed of steel.
The steel angle iron is one of the items you need if you are going to get started on many different projects. You could regard it as the bedrock of many items and structures that you can make.
If you do not know anything about angle irons yet, though, keep reading. It makes sense to know at least a little about them since you are always in such close proximity to them.
What is an Angle Iron?
First, let us define angle irons so you know what we mean when we use this term. An angle iron, whether it is composed of steel or some other metal, is a hard, rigid piece of building material pounded or molded into a particular shape.
The shape is that of the capital letter L. In other words, when you look at an angle iron, you should see a shorter piece jutting out, an intersection, and then a longer piece on the other side.
Angle irons come in all sizes and in several different materials. You can get one that weighs a few ounces or thousands of pounds.
Generally, the smaller the angle iron, the smaller the project for which you are using it. The larger the angle iron, the larger the project for which you need it.
Why Do They Matter So Much When You Want to Construct Something?
There are all kinds of ways you can build something. Nothing says you absolutely must use some angle irons when you are creating an object or a building from scratch.
However, if you use angle irons when building something, particularly if you use them in the object or item’s base, then it will be a lot more stable. Items that feature angle irons are built to last. The shape is fundamentally useful when you’re engaged in the creation of many items or tackling various projects in a variety of niches or industries.
Why Do So Few People Know About Them?
It’s true that if you walk up to someone on the street and ask them what an angle iron is, there’s a pretty good chance that this person will have never heard of them before. If they’ve heard of them, it doesn’t mean that they know the best uses for them, either.
It may perplex you how few people know about angle irons, since you can find them at the base of so many items that you might feature in your home. However, how many people actually take the time to think about how something is constructed?
If you were to point out that a bookcase next to someone features angle irons that support the shelves, then they might take a passing interest in that, but they may not find it to be truly fascinating. However, if you were to speak to an engineer about it, they would probably have a lot more interest.
Individuals who care about how things are put together are usually more eager to learn about fundamental building blocks like angle irons. Anyone who has a healthy interest in DIY projects will probably be a lot more interested in them as well.
What Are Some Examples of How to Use an Angle Iron?
You can use angle irons at the base of a building to make the foundation strong. In addition to poured concrete, having angle irons in the right spots in the building’s foundation will often keep it from falling over or eroding, even if there’s an earthquake.
It is because of the angle iron’s unique shape. When an angle iron is used as the base for a large, heavy structure, it holds up wonderfully well. That is why they have been used for so many years by architects, masons, and other individuals who design and erect buildings.
You will also find angle irons in your couch or bed. Once again, they are in the base. If you know what to look for, you can find them, usually welded to the bottom of the piece of furniture in question.
What Are Some Projects You Might Try Using Angle Irons?
Once you know about how borderline miraculous angle irons are, you might want to get some and use them in your home projects. If you’re someone who has an interest in DIY, then buying some angle irons is a sensible start to many projects.
You might use the angle irons to make a bookcase that you can feature in your home. If you want the bookcase to look a little more personalized and less like something you would buy at an Ikea, then this would be the way to go.
You can also choose from a long list of other furniture items if you buy some angle irons in advance. You might make yourself a coffee table. You may also go with a pergola in your backyard. You can use the angle irons to reinforce a backyard fence that you want to erect as well.
You can build a minimalist bed frame if you have some angle irons. You might make outdoor furniture such as chairs, tables, benches, etc.
If you don’t want to create something from scratch with angle irons, you can use them to make repairs around the house as well. If you have a backyard fence that is sagging, and you’re worried about your dog escaping, you can reinforce the fence with angle irons. If you have a pergola that is sagging, you can save it with angle irons.
Now that you know about angle irons, you should appreciate them for their strength and versatility.
