The Case for Life Insurance in Your 20s

When you’re in your 20s, life insurance may be the last thing on your mind. After all, your life as an adult has only just started. There’s still so much to do and experience, and the idea of worrying about what would happen if you died might seem unnecessary or even morbid,

But everyone has different paths in life, in fact some people in their 20s can have families, mortgages, and other financial responsibilities that could benefit from the protection. So regardless of our current situation, it’s time to think about your options and why you may need life insurance, even in your 20s.

Why should young people consider getting life insurance?

Life insurance is often seen as something you need when you’re older but this is a misconception. You can never be too old or young to get life insurance, it’s more dependent on your situation. Even in your twenties, there are situations where it can be worth getting life cover, especially if you have people who depend on you financially. In fact, it may actually pay off to get cover when you’re young.

Here are some reasons why you might need life insurance in your 20s:

  • You have a partner who relies on you financially –  this way they can receive support to cover the loss of income if something were to happen to you.
  • You have children – in which case you can provide support for your spouse as they raise your children in your absence.
  • You own or rent a property – if you have a mortgage, your loved ones may be able to use the payout from your policy to keep up with payments or if they rent the property, they can use it for future rent.
  • You want to be prepared – even if you don’t have dependants, you may want to take out cover so you are protected for the future.
  • To cover your funeral – if the worst happens and you pass away, your family would be left to cover your funeral costs, which can be expensive. Having cover in could reduce the burden, allowing your loved ones to grieve without the added financial stress. It differs from funeral plans, as it doesn’t have to be just used on funeral costs alone.

Common misconceptions about life insurance in your 20s

While it’s true that life insurance may not be a top priority in your 20s, there are still valid reasons to consider getting cover. It’s never too early to start planning for the future and protecting your loved ones.

Though you may not have dependants now, your circumstances could change in the future. Buying a policy ahead of time can ensure that you are prepared for whatever may come your way, and can provide peace of mind knowing that you have protection in place.

Which type of life insurance is best for people in their 20s?

There are two main types of life insurance – whole and term life insurance.

Whole life insurance is a type of permanent cover. So long as you maintain your premium payments, the policy will pay out a fixed lump sum when you pass away, whenever that may be. If you are in your 20s, it can be an ideal option if you want permanent cover. This way, you’ll have protection in place as you grow older and your circumstances change.

Term life insurance, on the other hand, provides cover for a specific term, for example 20 years. It’s typically more affordable than whole life insurance and can be a good option if you’re looking for temporary cover to protect your loved ones during specific periods of your life.

If you have a partner, it may be worth taking out joint life insurance. This type of cover protects two people within one policy, making it potentially cheaper than if you were to take out a policy each. Couples who rely on each other financially may find this type of insurance beneficial.

Tips for buying life insurance in your 20s

Now that you understand the importance of life insurance, how do you choose the right policy? Here are a few tips to help you make an informed decision:

  1. Assess your needs: Before you can take out a policy you need to think about how much cover you need. To do this, think about any current and future expenses that your family would require support with if you suddenly died.
  2. Understand different policy types: As we’ve mentioned, there are various types of life insurance policies. Be sure to take each policy’s benefits and drawbacks into account to find the best fit for your needs.
  3. Compare quotes: There are countless life insurance providers out there offering different rates and options for cover. Rather than choose any older provider, make use of online comparison tools to get the best offer.
  4. Review and update your policy regularly: Your life can change over time, so it’s important to review your policy every so often to ensure that it still aligns with your needs.

So you see, it’s never too early to start planning for the future and protecting your loved ones. Even if you are in your 20s, you shouldn’t throw away the idea of getting cover.
