One of the very first steps in creating a healthier and happier home living space is to become more aware of what’s in the products we use on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, many of our typical household items contain hazardous chemicals that can negatively impact not only our health, but the planet as a whole. Luckily, all it takes is a little awareness and some simple swaps to protect yourself and your family from any harm.
Chemical-Based Cleaners
Harsh chemicals like ammonia, bleach, and phthalates are often unnecessarily added to our daily household cleaners. These substances have been known to irritate the skin, create respiratory problems, and even create indoor air pollution.
Luckily, you can still properly clean your home without having to deal with any of these negative side effects by simply switching to natural cleaners. You can find natural and organic versions of kitchen and bathroom cleaners, laundry soap, and even toilet disinfectants! These are made with natural ingredients that won’t harm your health and are often scented with essential oils to make your home smell fresh.
Air Fresheners
Although they can add a luxurious scent to your home, many air fresheners release synthetic fragrances and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are less-than-ideal to be breathing in on a day-to-day basis.
Constant inhalation of these chemicals can lead to (or worsen) issues like allergies, asthma episodes, and other respiratory problems. Instead of these aerosol cans, opt for more natural ways to fragrance your home, like potpourri and essential oil diffusers. Fresh flowers are also a lovely and bright option with the added benefit of their beauty.
Plastic Food Containers
When plastic is exposed to heat or acidic foods, it can release dangerous chemicals such as phthalates and BPAs into your food. These chemicals have been recognized as endocrine disruptors and have been connected to a number of health problems, including reproductive disorders and hormone imbalances.
While plastic containers are the more affordable and easy option, it’s clear why it’s worth it to invest in higher quality glass or stainless steel containers for your leftovers. You could also look out for BPA-free plastic containers for a more affordable pick.
Pesticides and Herbicides
While you probably find it important to protect your garden and indoor plants from nasty pests, you should know that chemical pesticides and herbicides can have an extremely negative impact on the environment and your health.
Instead of using chemical solutions to control these pests, look into some more natural solutions like neem oil and diatomaceous earth or introduce some more helpful insects to the scene.
Synthetic Personal Care Products
Finally, you might not be aware that a lot of shampoos, soaps, and cosmetics include a whole hoard of synthetic ingredients like parabens and sulphates, that can be absorbed through your skin and impact your health.
Instead, start looking for natural and organic options that don’t have any of these dangerous substances. Choosing safer options for your skincare and beauty routine will give you peace of mind and a healthier, happier body.
