Retirement is something everyone looks forward to. However, it can also come with a lot of doubt and uncertainty. Likewise, it can even come with health problems. According to a 2012 study, retired people have a much higher chance of developing heart disease than someone that continues to work. A big problem for many who retire is depression.

Here are some of the best tips from Easy Pay Mobility that you can use if you want to stay active post-retirement. These things are crucial to keep you physically and mentally healthy.

1. Do Some Physical Exercise

One of the most important things you need to do is incorporate more physical exercise into your daily life. Doing a minimum of 150 minutes of exercise each week is key. You need to incorporate everything from moderate aerobic exercise to strength training. Both of these things are important according to the U.S Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. You can do things like take a brisk walk and begin your exercise routines slowly. Gradually build up your level of effort. Always discuss any changes in your exercise or diet plan with your physician to ensure you are adding moderate activity to your lifestyle in a healthy way.

The NIH says that adding exercise can drastically improve your strength and fitness and it can help to improve your abilities to do things that you need to do. Likewise, it can drastically improve your balance and allow you to fight off a lot of diseases that you would be at a heightened risk for without exercise. These include developing osteoporosis, heart disease, and more.

2. Stay Connected

A lot of those who retire end up falling off the grid. This is the last thing you want to do. Don’t fall into the habit of isolating yourself socially. Just because you retire doesn’t mean you need to lose out on all of the friendships you’ve made along the way. Maintain work relationships and friendships as per usual. As many as 40% of people who are over the age of 65 live by themselves. A big key to keeping depression off the table is by continuing to remain socially active. Continue to spend time with your friends and family and even join groups and incorporate more hobbies into your life to keep yourself socially connected.

3. Eat Healthily

Eating healthy is more important than ever when you get older. Eating healthy is a great way to ensure you give your body and mind all of the nutrients it needs. You need to not only eat healthily but also try to drink less alcohol. There is a lot of research that shows that older adults drink less. But many turn to alcohol when they retire because of boredom and stress. Keep an eye on how much you are drinking post-retirement and you won’t fall into that trap.

4. Learn New Skills

Learning is one of the best ways to keep yourself young. You want to try to continue to learn new skills as you age. This can ensure that you are keeping yourself mentally engaged. As you age, your mind can weaken. Your memory starts to fade and your cognitive abilities decline. By learning a new skill, you can minimize all of this. You can keep your memory intact and continue to use your brainpower as you did while working.

5. Get Some Sleep

You need to ensure that you are optimizing your sleep environment. You want to get a minimum of 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night according to experts. This can keep you mentally and physically restored and healthy.
