Adjusting to life as a parent can be challenging, no matter how excited you may be to welcome your little one into the world. After all, you have to run on next to no sleep while also learning to interpret their needs based on how they are crying. That’s before you even begin to think about other difficulties, such as diaper changes, bathing, and more.

With that in mind, here are some top tips for adjusting to life as a parent.

Do your research ahead of time. If you are expecting your first child, doing plenty of research into all things parenting ahead of time will provide you with greater peace of mind while also ensuring that you are prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead. There are many valuable ways to obtain this knowledge, from parenting books and classes to simply asking those around you for advice.

Get as much sleep as you can. Getting enough sleep when caring for a baby who wakes up every few hours can feel near-impossible. However, there are certain ways in which you can work around this.

For example, if you are raising a child with a partner, you should try to sleep in shifts. This way, you can each get as many hours of uninterrupted sleep as possible so that you have enough energy to look after your baby moving forward.

You should also abide by the age-old guidance of sleeping whenever your little one sleeps. While this may seem counterproductive during the daytime, where you are typically more alert, a fifteen-twenty-minute nap can have a markedly positive impact on the side effects of sleep deprivation. As such, if you notice them drifting off in their crib, try to get a little shut-eye yourself.

Finally, you must work on helping your little one develop a healthy sleep routine as soon as possible. You can ensure that your little one sleeps through the night by:

  • Playing soothing, calming sounds such as white noise when laying them down to sleep
  • Establishing a consistent nighttime routine
  • Feeding them before putting them to bed
  • Creating a calming bedroom environment
  • Changing their diaper before bed
  • Choosing ambient lighting
  • Ensuring that they are as comfortable as possible

Make the most of these moments. Believe it or not, in a few years, you’ll miss the sleepless nights and everything that comes hand-in-hand with caring for a newborn. This is because newborns turn into toddlers within the blink of an eye. As such, it is important that you savor these moments as much as possible so that you have plenty of wonderful memories to look back on. One way in which you could achieve this goal is by reaching out to a newborn baby photographer to take high-quality pictures.

Remember that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. The responsibility of caring for a newborn can feel overwhelming. However, it is important to note that this is an incredibly natural response and that it does not mean that you’re not cut out to be a parent. In fact, a recent study found that close to 50% of parents feel this way. Your feelings are valid, and accepting this is key to working through them.

Accept or ask for help. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and this is true even for the most hands-on parents. As such, you should not be afraid to ask for help and support during this time from those around you. This will make it far easier to adjust to life as a parent, no matter the nature of the assistance that they provide.

For example, if you feel as though you are surrounded by clutter and chaos, you may want to ask for help cleaning and organizing your home. Alternatively, you may want them to sit with your child for a little bit while you catch up on chores or even have a nap.

Take care of your mental health. Many new moms experience mental health struggles, often triggered by the rapid hormonal changes that occur postpartum. Furthermore, while it is not reported on as often, many dads experience similar challenges. As such, you should be sure to take good care of your mental health.

Perhaps the easiest way to do so is to talk openly and honestly about how you are feeling. Remember that nobody – be that your partner, a friend, or even a mental health therapist – will think any less of you for doing so. In fact, they will be glad that you opened up, as it means that they can support you appropriately moving forward. In addition to this, simply talking candidly as opposed to bottling up negative feelings can feel cathartic. This means that you’ll likely start feeling better the moment you start talking.

Joining a support group for new parents can also be incredibly useful during this time, as you are all in the same boat and therefore, encountering similar challenges. Not only can this add to your support network, but you can also share parenting tips and tricks with each other.

Practice self-care. You are more than just a parent. As such, you need to make sure that you set aside time in your routine for yourself without feeling guilty for doing so. Furthermore, self-care does not need to be a time-consuming process.

For example, you could easily develop a three-step skincare routine that fulfills your self-care needs while also encouraging you to take better care of yourself. Alternatively, you could spend ten minutes a day reading or participating in another relaxing activity. The more time you spend on self-care, the better you will feel.

Follow a healthy, balanced diet. Following a healthy, balanced diet can also help you to navigate your way through caring for a newborn. After all, this ensures that you’re taking good care of your health while also ensuring that you have enough energy to get you through the day.

As managing your diet at the best of times can be tough, one way in which you can get through this is via meal prepping. This way, you do not have to prepare meals from scratch every single day and can instead simply grab a meal from the fridge or freezer and heat it up. Alternatively, you could invest in a meal prep service so that you do not need to go grocery shopping in order to prepare fresh and healthy meals.

Know that you are doing your best. Knowing that you’re doing your best should provide you with a sense of relief during this time, especially in a world where it is so easy to compare ourselves to others and feel as though we aren’t doing enough. As such, whenever you begin to feel doubt or criticism settling in, remember that you cannot do anything more than you are doing right now.

Final thoughts. Caring for a newborn can feel like an uphill battle, even if this isn’t your first rodeo and you’ve cared for children before. However, there are plenty of steps that you can take to ensure that you are able to adjust to this change as seamlessly as possible. As discussed above, this includes:

  • Doing your research ahead of time
  • Getting as much sleep as possible
  • Making the most of these magical moments
  • Remember that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed
  • Accepting or asking for help when you need it
  • Taking care of your mental health
  • Following a healthy, balanced diet
  • Know that you are doing your best

Taking on this advice should allow you to move forward with your head held high.
