Day trips with your family are a fun way to spend time together and break the monotony of everyday life. They are also a great way to bond and create memories. To make sure that your day trip is successful, you should plan it well in advance. Of course, you can have a great time on a spur of the moment trip, but if you have these tips in mind you can easily put them in place quickly.
A day trip is not just about going somewhere, it’s about the experience you have when you get there. So before you start planning your next family day out, take a look at these tips for how to plan them with your family.
Choose the right destination
If you are planning to travel soon, it is best to start researching your destination. Once you have a destination in mind, there are many things that you can do to plan your trip. From figuring out the best time of year to go to the type of activities you want to do while there. Will it suit the whole family? What clothes should you wear and will they need a change of clothes? Should we take a picnic or money for lunch? All those will depend on where you are going.
Make your plans in advance
What is the best way to make your travel plans?
There are many ways you can make your travel plans. One of them is by using a travel planner app. This app will not only help you plan your trip but will also allow you to share it with friends and family. You can also find out more about the destination before you book a flight or hotel room. Then there’s the good old notebook and pen, make a list the night before of everything you might need, where to take a break etc.
Pack smart; pack light!
When packing for a day trip, it is important to make sure that you are packing smart and light.
Packing smart means that you should pack items that can serve multiple purposes. For example, you could take a towel with you that can clean up bodies and spills at the same time.
Packing light means that you should not bring more than what is necessary on your trip. This will help to reduce the weight of your bags and will make them easier to carry around when traveling as well. I like to take a rucksack because you can carry it easily with your hands free, and both parents will be happy to carry it.
Organise travel ahead of time
Organising travel ahead of time is a good way to avoid unnecessary stress. It will give you peace of mind and save you money. If you’re driving, plan out the route and know how long it will take. This will dictate if you can do it in one go or will need to factor in rest and fuel stops.
You can buy train tickets in advance, book buses or flights in advance, and take advantage of deals that are available.
Buying train tickets in advance is the best way to get the cheapest price possible as they are cheaper when bought early. You should also have a look at the train times and see which trains offer more frequent services with the least changes.
If you want to explore a little further from home, consider booking a quick flight to get you to your destination without the need to worry about long car or train rides with the kids. Be sure to take a look at airport fast track options, too, as this will save you time through security. When you have kids in tow, it’s always worth looking at these options to ensure that you’re getting through the airport as quickly as possible to avoid any unnecessary delays.
Bring some activities to keep them busy
Pack a few of their favorite toys and games, or bring along some coloring books and crayons to keep them occupied while you drive. Hopefully, where you are going they have plenty to keep the family busy. National Trust and English Heritage places are always good for us, they often have trails and playgrounds to keep the kids amused and they’re never that busy.
Keep snacks on hand
Kids get hungry at the most inopportune times, so it’s always good to have something easy on hand like granola bars, crisps, raisins, breadsticks, or fruit snacks that they can munch on without making a mess in the car.
Well, there you have it, my best tips on planning a family day trip. I hope it has given you a useful tool to help you plan your trip. The key is preparation, preparation, preparation!
