No one likes being told that they have something wrong with how they look and need a little help. Least of all a teenager. Unfortunately, teeth can be an emotive issue, and the reality is some children will need to wear braces or suffer the consequences if they do not. As a parent, you have to find the right way to coax your reluctant child into first of all accepting that they need braces and then actually getting them to wear them. Well, as this is an uphill struggle, we decided to put forward a few tips and pieces of advice to help you convince your child to get a brace, whether it is from an orthodontist London has to offer or one closer to home:
Their Looks
A teenager will clearly be concerned with how the braces will look. They will be worrying that it may set them up for bullying. But what is worse, having a brace now or having much more crooked teeth in a few years. Having a brace will actually improve the way they look and give them more self-confidence in the future. They have to be convinced that the brace is a small price to pay for a winning smile in a couple of years.
They Are Not The Only One
There will be plenty of teenagers at their school who are wearing braces. It would help if you made a habit of pointing it out. Maybe making them feel that they are not an isolated case will go a long way to helping build their confidence to actually wear one. A lot of famous people have worn braces in the past. Maybe this is an avenue you can go down when trying to battle your child apprehension. Also, if you or your partner wore a brace when you were younger, now is the time to fess up. Your story may be a great help.
What about the Metal?
Having a metal mouth is no an appealing prospect to a teenager. This can be for many reasons, such as the way it looks and how it feels. Also, what about getting that sandwich stuck in the metal wires. Also, the fact that they are stuck inside the mouth is not exactly a selling point, especially if your teenager is into sport and does not want something like a brace to hold them back. Fortunately, we live in a time when metal braces are only one option of many. These days you can choose from a variety of different kinds, such as clear teeth braces. Some of these are actually removable, and they do not look as unattractive as the metal kind. If you check out this dentist in Vienna VA, they’ll also tell you that there are ceramic braces that are still inconspicuous if clear braces are not good for their dental situation.
It is an Investment
A brace is an investment in their future. Not only will it give them more self-confidence, as their misaligned teeth will be straight, but it will save them a lot of unnecessary trips to the dentist too. The long and short of it is, if they don’t have a brace now, they will be forced to do something later. This may include having teeth removed due to tooth decay. No one wants missing teeth or teeth that they cannot clean properly.
