What type of driveway should you choose?

When we chose our driveway, we took several factors into account, including aesthetics, durability, maintenance requirements, and cost. We really liked the idea of a resin driveway but the cost put me off. In the end, we went with block paving in a light and dark grey design. We are really pleased with the way it turned out. So how much does a new driveway cost? And what are the types of driveways you can choose? Ours was a large driveway and we did it as part of our extension. It was around £10000 including the landscaping. Always look for recommendations from your builders or landscapers and ask to look at their previous work. Here are some popular driveway designs along with a brief description of each and their approximate costs to help you make your decision.

Gravel Driveway

Gravel driveways are relatively affordable and offer a rustic, traditional look. They consist of loose gravel or crushed stone, which requires periodic replenishment to maintain its appearance. Gravel driveways cost around £1200 to £7200, depending on the size you want covered, and the type and availability of the gravel.

Concrete Driveway

Concrete driveways are durable and require minimal maintenance. They can be plain or decorative, with various finishing options such as stamping or staining. Concrete driveways typically cost between £2700 to £14000, depending on factors like area covered, complexity of design, accessibility, and local labor costs.

Block Paving Driveway

Block paving driveways are made from individual blocks or bricks that can be arranged in different patterns, creating a visually appealing surface. They offer good durability and can be easily repaired by replacing individual blocks if necessary. Block paving driveways generally range from £2100 to £10000, depending on the quality of materials, size, and complexity of the design.

Tarmac Driveway

Tarmac, also known as asphalt, is a popular choice for driveways due to its durability and smooth surface. It is a cost-effective option but may require occasional resealing. The cost of a tarmac driveway typically falls within the range of £1200 to £5400, depending on factors such as thickness, accessibility, area to cover, and local labor costs.

Resin Driveway

Resin driveways offer a modern, decorative look and are available in various colors and finishes. They consist of a mixture of resin and aggregate, creating a smooth, permeable surface. Resin driveways are relatively low maintenance and cost approximately £1500 to £7200, depending on the quality of materials, size, and design complexity.

Please note that these cost ranges are approximate and can vary depending on several factors. It’s always recommended to consult with local contractors or refer to a driveway cost guide specific to your region for more accurate pricing information.
