Since our extension has been completed, we now have a few blank walls. I have some pictures to put back up but they seem a bit dwarfed by the space. I keep looking for inspiration on Pinterest and I have some ideas for a gallery wall, it’s making the decisions that are the most difficult. With the magnificent invention that is command strips, I no longer have to make holes in the wall much to my husband’s delight. I am rather impulsive and don’t like measuring and using a spirit level. Using command strips means I can change my mind and move things around if I change my mind.
I also have a Macrame kit I bought from Aldi to start myself off in the art. I’m always looking at craft, art, and macrame videos on social media and I would love to make my own. The trouble is my arm and hand on my right side are still weak and stiff and painful so I have to pick my moments. I also suffer from chronic fatigue so when I get spare time I often need to just lie down and my eyes close. One day!
In the meantime, I was gifted a piece of art of my choice from Wychwood art. It was so exciting to look through all the art they have to offer at my own pace and time and choose a piece. Wychwood art is a contemporary art gallery selling affordable art online and from their Cotswold art gallery based in Deddington, UK. They also sell at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea, London, in March each year. They represent over 350 contemporary artists and offer a free art advisory service for the artists they represent. I really like the thought of supporting UK based artists and proudly displaying their work in my home.
After a lot of deliberating, I chose this simple painting of a mackerel by the artist Zaza Shelley. She paints primarily in ink and watercolour. She paints most of her images directly from life. When she’s not in her studio, she is out on walks or on farms painting the animals she comes across. I thought her piece was perfect for the kitchen.

The Wychwood art website has different categories and price points you can browse, and if you are local you can browse in their gallery. They have free shipping in the UK and you have 14 days to return if you are not satisfied. I found it easy to navigate and they have lots of different styles to choose from to suit different budgets, so if you’re looking for art prints online you would find it easy to choose something to suit your needs. My picture came in perfect condition, unframed. I bought a black frame and decided to use some leftover wallpaper to highlight it. I think it looks great in my kitchen and it already makes it look more homely. Now I need to be brave and go for the gallery wall.
