Starting up your own business is one of the most stressful things you can do in life. Building a company from the ground up is a huge investment, requiring a great deal of your time and money. You have to work incredibly hard to see success, and for all your sweat and tears, there is always a risk that it will fail.
You’ll be up at the crack of dawn and slaving away well into the early hours, chasing up leads, seeking funding, and growing your professional network. You’ll have to learn new and unfamiliar skills like web design and social media marketing. And to top it all off, you’ll have to fit all of this around your personal life and commitments. It’s especially stressful if you already have a full time job or a family to provide for.
But if you can push past the difficult teething period and start to build your customer base, you will soon see the profits trickling in and there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to find a way to manage your stress and not give up.
To help you succeed with your entrepreneurial journey while taking care of your mental health at the same time, here are a few great tips for running a stress-free business.
Set boundaries
Your busy is your baby, and it’s easy to let it take over your life. If you’re not careful, you could end up overdoing it and burning out. Make sure you set boundaries, and don’t let your work life blur into your home life. Try to stick to a routine, establishing a fixed time to start work and finish work each day. Outside of these hours, take time to enjoy yourself and let off some steam.
Take breaks
There’s nothing wrong with working hard at something you’re passionate about, but it is definitely possible to overdo it. Make sure you are taking regular breaks to recharge your batteries. Set an alarm on your phone to go off every half hour, so you can remember to take five minutes to stretch, drink some water, and take your eyes off the screen. Try to schedule some time off each week in which work is not a priority. Spend this time with family or engaging in hobbies you enjoy. When you do return to work, you will feel much more refreshed and productive as a result.
Look after your physical health
If you look after your body, your mind will take care of itself. When you run a business, you might find it difficult to find the time to work out and eat healthily, but it is absolutely crucial to prioritize physical wellbeing. Your mental health will benefit and you will feel much more able to tackle the various obstacles of business.
Thirty minutes a day is all you need for a good workout, so try going for a run before sitting down at your laptop in the morning. Or sign up to an evening Pilates class to wind down at the end of a long day.
Eating well is not difficult, as long as you restrain the urge to order unhealthy takeaways when you need to knuckle down and get work done. Even if you’re time-strapped, there are so many healthy meals you can cook that take very little time and effort. And if grocery shopping is too much a chore, you can always order your food online and have it delivered to your front door. Meal subscription boxes like HelloFresh are a great option for busy working professionals, as they send you a variety of recipes each week, with all the ingredients and instructions to prepare them yourself.
Outsource
A business owner has to wear many different hats. Not only are you in charge of your company, you also have to deal with the marketing, the accounting, the IT support, and the sales. Juggling all these plates can be stressful, especially as you have to learn all these skills along the way. Outsourcing an area of your business to an external third-party is a great way to take some of the strain away from you. For example, if your website goes down, you can just call up your dedicated business IT provider who can solve the issue for you while you get on with the more important task of growing your company. Although this option comes at a price, you know you are hiring experts to do the job, and you will have more precious time on your hands to get things done.
