Traveling is one of life’s greatest pleasures. After all, you get to explore a new place and try new food. You also get to immerse yourself into a different culture and way of living. But most importantly, you get to experience new opportunities and meet new people. Traveling is something we all should get to experience, but traveling can also get expensive. Between airfare and accommodations, one short trip can make a serious dent in your bank account.
However, what if traveling didn’t have to be so expensive? What if you could have an amazing trip while sticking to your budget? Just because you’re going on vacation doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money. You simply have to be smart about the way you travel. Check out these four tips to travel if you’re on a budget.
1. Have a Plan
Spontaneity is great, but not so much when you’re traveling on a budget. Before you go on a trip, create a detailed plan about what you’re going to do and how much money you want to spend. That means accommodation, food, activities, and everything else you’re interested in. Being prepared with a plan will ultimately stop you from spending money frivolously. You can use a travel planning app to help you get started.
2. Find Cheap Airfare
It’s likely that your plane tickets are going to be the most expensive cost out of your entire trip. This is why it’s so important to find cheap airfare. Luckily, there are tons of ways you can go about finding more affordable airfare. First, you want to be flexible with your dates and times. In fact, flying out on a Tuesday rather than a Friday can save you a couple hundred bucks.
Second, you want to use the right websites. There are tons of airfare websites that can help you find great flight deals. For example, you can book low cost flights from Wichita to Denver for under $200. Take some time to do your research and you’re bound to find affordable airfare.

3. Don’t Be Picky
When you’re trying to save money while traveling, the last thing you want to be is picky. This means being picky with food, accommodation, and activities. You can’t afford to be selective when you’re on a budget. For example, rather than splurging on your own room in an expensive hotel, stay at a hostel. You can find great hostels in New York City, or around the world, at a fraction of the price of what it would cost to get a hotel room. Plus, hostels are a great way to meet people if you’re traveling alone.
4. Pack Properly
There’s nothing worse than thinking you packed light and then getting to the airport and finding out your luggage is 10 pounds overweight. Yikes. Overweight bag fees are hefty and that is definitely something you want to avoid when it comes to traveling on a budget. You’re also likely going to be taking public transportation when traveling. Heavy luggage and public transportation just do not mix. Try your best to pack as light as possible for a trip. Using packing cubes is a great way to fit a lot into your luggage.
Going on vacation doesn’t have to be a luxury. You don’t have to splurge on expensive food and a 5-star hotel just to have a nice trip. You can have an incredible experience traveling, and not break the bank while doing some. You just have to be smart about the way you travel. Don’t let the cost of vacation sway you from going. Traveling is something we all should get to experience, even if you’re on a budget.
