The world is facing a coronavirus pandemic. To stop it from spreading further, governments of different nations have put their communities on a lockdown, quarantine, or in isolation. The lockdowns or community quarantines have disrupted many operations and countless people’s everyday lives.

When you’re stuck at home for an uncertain amount of time, it’s understandable to feel just a little bit stir-crazy. To avoid feeling this way, find some activities that can distract you from what’s happening. Here are some.

Spend Time with Your Family

If you haven’t done family time for a while, now’s your chance. Schedule movie nights on Fridays, play board games in the afternoon, cook meals with the family, do arts and crafts with the kids, and read books together.

Take this opportunity to catch up with your family and bond with the kids. The coronavirus pandemic has reminded everyone that anything can happen and that families and friends can be taken in just a snap of a finger. It’s time to treasure the people you love and make them feel how important they are.

Clean and Declutter Your Home

Now, that you’re stuck at home, you may as well make your place spic-and-span. If you haven’t done your new-year cleaning yet, you likely have a ton of stuff cluttering your house and hiding in your cabinets and drawers.

Start decluttering your home by sorting your stuff first. Prepare three boxes or bags—one for things to keep, another for things to donate, and the last for things to throw away. You may also want to sell your stuff online through an e-commerce store or marketplace to supplement your income.

As for cleaning the entire house, you can create a list of chores and gradually check off the items in the following days so that you don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of work to do.

Teach Yourself Something New

With lots of spare time on your hands now that your time outside is minimal, it might be time to consider teaching yourself something new. Whether that means you learn a new skill that will help with your future career or you learn a skill that allows you to develop a new hobby, it’s a great way to ensure you’re staying productive during the lockdown. If you are interested in skills that could further your careers, an ITIL certification might be a great place to start.

Start on Your Reading List

Almost everyone has a reading list that they’ve put off starting for other more demanding tasks. Well, now you have the time to get on with yours. Reading is an enjoyable and productive way to pass the time.

A good book can keep your mind off what’s happening now, teach a few things, and make you happy too. If you want someone to talk to, there are lots of amazing people in book communities too.

Take a Free Online Course

Whether there are community isolation measures, it’s always an excellent idea to take free online courses. You can learn something new or further your studies and add to your repertoire of skills and expertise.

Many top universities offer free online courses for everyone. Open Culture has a list of 1,500 free online courses from top universities. You can also head to these sites for free online education.

If you’re not in the mood for anything serious, there are some fun (and, of course, free!) online courses that you can finish in a week’s time. You can also take courses with the whole family.

Start a New Creative Hobby

Learning a new  creative hobby has many benefits. These benefits include the following:

  • A creative hobby gives you a productive way to make use of your time.
  • It provides you with an outlet for your creativity, thoughts, and emotions.
  • It can help improve your mental health, especially during this trying time.
  • You can gain new skills and knowledge through starting a creative hobby.
  • It can help you gain confidence in yourself.
  • It’s fun.

With all the good things you can reap from starting a creative hobby, you may be wondering which one to take up and how you can get into it. Wonder no more! The internet is a treasure trove of what-tos, how-tos, tutorials, and guides for anyone who wants to learn or try something new. Alternatively, you can head to YouTube to find video tutorials of how to do this and that.

Final Word

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has been hard on everyone, especially those who are fighting the diseases every day, the homeless, the hungry, those who have lost livelihoods.

For the many who are fortunate enough to face fewer challenges during this pandemic, the best way to help is to cooperate with the health-care sector and practice social distancing to stop this virus from spreading, not overwhelm the health-care system, and save lives, including yours and your family’s.
