With all the hassle involved in planning and executing a family holiday, we want it to be as memorable and exceptional as possible. It’s one of the only times during the year that we are able to relax, unwind, and spend quality time with our little ones, as well as explore new places and cultures. So we want an incredible destination, right? No more campsites in the north of France or beach resorts in Majorca, it’s time to get your adventuring hats on and try a family holiday with a difference.
Norway
The experience of witnessing the Northern Lights is one that you and your family will hold dear forever, with absolutely no exceptions. And what better place to catch a glimpse of this magical spectacle than northern Norway? With very little light pollution it’s one of the only places on Earth that gets such a great view of the Aurora Borealis. But there’s even more things to do in Norway according to hekla.com, with interesting cuisine, a whole host of outdoor adventure activities on the rugged landscape and beautiful coastline, Viking museums and longhouses, and idyllic log cabins – it’s the perfect family holiday destination.
Mongolia
When you think of family holidays, your mind probably doesn’t immediately go to Mongolia, or Asia at all for that matter. It can seem like quite an alien destination, and many people worry that taking children that far afield is asking for trouble. But if you are able to look past all that, the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, the home of Genghis Khan, is an incredible landscape for exploration, adventure, and getting new experiences. Incredible sand dunes, awe-inspiring canyons, camel trekking, and even a dinosaur graveyard make this an amazing destination for families with slightly older kids.
Japan
The culture and customs of Japan could not be more different to our own, and kids absolutely love it. With Hello Kitty Cafes, DisneySea, bullet trains, cherry blossom lined paths, and futuristic billboards, Japan could be considered the perfect family holiday destination for any family with an adventurous side. Absolutely any Japan holiday with kids has to include Electric City, the Pokemon Centre, and a trip to see the adorable monkeys at the Kyoto Monkey Park. The hyper-modern public transport system makes it really easy to get around and see the country, as well as feeling like you’re in a sci-fi film.
The Scottish Highlands
If you want to stay a little bit closer to home, forget Cornwall and head up north instead. The Scottish highlands, with their stunning vistas, might not be your first choice of family holiday destination, especially as the kids can’t enjoy the whisky, but it has far more to offer than you might initially think. With outdoor adventures from kayaking and sailing the lochs to hiking and cycling, any family who loves being outside are going to be in their element.
Family holidays don’t have to be prosaic resort holidays – they should be full of adventure, discovery, and intrigue for the whole family, especially the kids.
