When you’re pregnant, if there’s one thing you can often struggle to do it’s relax. Whether it’s your hormones that are raging or you’re getting yourself worked up about your impending due date, there are so many stresses you may face.
However, practicing the art of mindfulness during your pregnancy is key to protecting yours and your baby’s health and well-being throughout this time.
Here are 3 ways you can boost your well-being through mindfulness:
1. Start Meditating
One of the easiest ways to help you get into this state of mindfulness is to meditate. You could do this on your own when you get a quiet 5 minutes or so, or you may find it easier to do this in a pregnancy yoga class or one that specialises in meditation. There are even some apps available that help you tune out of the stresses of day-to-day life and become more in tune with yourself.
Find what works for you, whether that’s a quick meditation session in the morning, a class several times a week, or an app that you can click onto whenever you feel like you need some time out.
All of these ways will help you focus on your breathing, refocusing your mind and promoting better self-awareness.
2. Use Aromatherapy Products
Another wonderful way to relax, unwind and clear your mind is to use aromatherapy products. These are designed to help you relax, feel rejuvenated or de-stress at the end of a long day.
For example, you could use these products in the evening while you’re having a bath (e.g. lighting a candle) or you can use a pillow mist to help you drift off better when you get into bed.
3. Practice Gratitude
When you’re pregnant you’re given a green card for moaning and groaning about things. But trying to put a positive spin on everything is a far more rewarding experience for the body and soul.
OK, so your back is aching, your feet are swollen and you’re feeling exhausted – but you also have a wonderful partner who’s picking up the chores, friends who are helping you relax, and a mum who’s talking you through your pregnancy step by step.
So, whenever you feel as though you’re focusing on something negative, try to replace this with a positive thought. It doesn’t matter how small your positive is (i.e. you’ve not needed the toilet for at least an hour!), celebrating these wins all works towards inducing positive mindfulness throughout your pregnancy.
It’s All About You – for Now
It won’t be long before you barely get a second to yourself, so taking this important time out now to be mindful of yourself is crucial.
Find ways you can give yourself the time you need to unwind and don’t be afraid of being selfish – you need to take the chance while you have it.
