Five Things Every Family Garden Needs

It can be challenging to design and create a garden that meets the needs of every member of your family. This is especially true if you have children of a range of ages with a range of interests and hobbies. But below you’ll find some useful tips and tricks on what you should include helping get the most use and enjoyment out of your space.

A Space to Spend Time Together

One element every family garden needs is of course a family! It’s key to ensure that every member of the house has something in the space they can use and enjoy, but you should also think about how you can use it to spend time as one unit together. Depending on the size of your garden, your design preferences, and your budget, you could create a patio or decking area. This forms the ideal space to share mealtimes together outside. Another idea could be to add an outdoor canopy to create a covered area you can use throughout the year, especially during those cooler winter nights. Once you’ve created an area to spend time together, you can make it more inviting and personable with the simple addition of some outdoor lights, cushions, throws, and an outdoor rug.

A Space Which Keeps Everyone Safe

If you have young children, it’s crucial that you make sure the garden is a safe space. This will mean you’re more likely to use the area and you won’t have to worry about keeping an eye on your little ones all the time. For example, if you have a pond or another water feature you could put a safety grid across the top. Or if you have animals outside, like chickens, make sure they are securely contained within their pen or run.

A Space To Keep Fit and Active

Most family gardens that get good use will have a space for the children to run, play and let off steam, whether that’s a lawn or even some artificial grass. You could use this space to practice and play sports like padel tennis or football. This is also a great way to encourage an active lifestyle while developing everyone’s physical skills and techniques. Alternatively, you may want to add some pieces of outdoor gym equipment, like a cross trainer, for a more traditional workout. And don’t forget to add some of the classic play equipment, like a trampoline, swing set or a climbing frame. Top tip: don’t forget to keep your children safe in the sun if they’re out playing during the day.

A Space for Everyone

Once you’ve got your play area set up and ready to use, you may want to create a space aimed towards any older children, teenagers, and adults. This could be a space to enjoy a hobby or even to sit back and relax. You could add some deck chairs and a fabric shade sail to create a calm seating space. Or for more of a social space, you may want to add a BBQ or fire pit where you can sit around with friends during the evenings. If you’re a keen chef, you could create an outdoor kitchen to whip up a feast alfresco.

A Space with Greenery

Last, but not least your garden needs some greenery. Don’t worry if you’re not an experienced gardener, you can find plants and flowers which require minimal maintenance and care. Planting some flowers, shrubs and plants is a great way of adding colour, texture, and life to your garden. It can also provide a creative output as you can plan and design your dream garden and how it looks through each season. Perhaps you’re more of a fan of growing your own food than flowers and want to set up a vegetable bed. A herb garden is a great addition as this produce can be added to your cooking for extra flavour. Don’t forget to get your kids involved with growing your fruit and veg as this helps to encourage a balanced diet full of fresh food.

Hopefully, by now, you should have some great ideas to help you get started with the design of your family garden. Remember to always have your family’s requirements and needs at the forefront of your mind to ensure you create a space that gets plenty of use. Good luck and have fun!
