The big build has started at last! You may remember my last post about our home renovation when we had the extension plans approved. If you have been in the same position as me you will know it’s not a quick process. We chose a builder and then waited for the start date. We also had to secure a bit of extra funding which was an added stressor. But, now we are here, so I thought I’d update you all on where we are at.
We started work a couple of weeks ago now and things are progressing rapidly. Our old external larder has been demolished, meaning we had to find new homes for all our tins, crisps, packets, dry goods and god knows what else. It’s meant our small kitchen is even more cramped now but the end goal is in sight. The digger came and dug the foundations outside, plus excavated where the new patio and driveway will go. The garage has a new air con feature aka the large hole. Right now they are building the walls for the new rear extension. The next phase will be starting the loft extension. The roof to the new extension will go on when the loft extension is finished.

We have lots of decisions ahead of us, it is stressful but also very exciting. We have chosen a kitchen – it is going to be dark green shaker style cabinets with gold handles, with a quartz worktop, but we still have so many others to make. We will be creating two extra shower rooms, one in the loft for the boys and one downstairs which will be our downstairs toilet and the shower will be mainly for the dog! We have to choose the type of shower cabins we want along with tiles and decoration. I’m torn on the décor for the boys’ shower room, I’d love to theme it somehow but I may end up going quite plain and then jazzing it up with accessories. They both love Minecraft and gaming so I might incorporate something along those lines.

Another big decision is the flooring. We’ll be creating one big open plan kitchen diner area and I’m unsure whether to have the same floor throughout and in the separate living room, or to have different flooring in the two rooms, or split level in the open plan room. I really like herringbone pattern flooring, and I don’t know whether to have LVT, real wood or high quality laminate. There are pros and cons to each one. I have some time left to decide, and I probably will decide under pressure and go with my gut. I will be posting updates on my Instagram and Facebook stories so be sure to follow me on there, I’m @lifeandthelords.

So far the builders have been great, very professional, on time and they work very hard. They keep us informed all the way. We went with a company called Hallmark Home Builds and they cover the Kent area. I’ll keep you all updated as we go along. You can also check out: A Complete Guide to Renovating Your Kitchen
