Thinking of becoming a teacher? There are lots of perks to pursuing a career in teaching. Below are some of the biggest reasons to become a teacher.
The personal reward
Teaching can be a highly rewarding career. Like policing or nursing, teaching is an essential job and can give many people a strong sense of purpose. Some of the kids you teach may even be inspired to take up higher education and you may even help to shape their career. You can also help kids to develop life skills that could help in their personal life.
Good job security
Teaching is a very secure profession. There will always be a need for it and as a result, you don’t have to worry about your future. This job security could help you when applying for long-term loans like mortgages – when applying for a teacher mortgage, you often have access to more deals. It could also help you when applying to rent a property.
Lots of time off
As a teacher, you won’t have to work during the school holidays – and you’ll still get paid during this time. Overall, teachers get roughly about 13 weeks paid holiday per year. This is more than practically any other profession. As a result, being a teacher could allow you to more freely travel and pursue hobbies. If you’re a parent, you’ll also be able to spend more time with your kids and won’t have to worry about looking into childcare over the holidays.
Follow your passions
Primary school teachers tend to teach a range of subjects. However, secondary school teachers get to specialise in one subject. In the latter case, this could allow you to teach a subject that you have a passion for. It could be a way of following your interests and could add to the sense of job satisfaction.
A job you can practice anywhere
There are some trades that require you to move to certain places in order to practice them.Teaching is a job that you can do anywhere in the world. If you decide that you want to move across the country, you may not have to worry as much about finding a job. This could give you a lot of flexibility.
How to become a teacher
To become a teacher, you generally need to obtain a degree of 2:2 or above. This should ideally be in the subject that you plan to teach. After this you will need to take a teacher training course. You can find a more detailed guide on becoming a teacher here.
There are bursaries available that could allow you to more easily afford to train as a teacher. Teacher training programs can differ depending on whether you’re training in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland – there may be different requirements in some cases. These training programs are transferable though, meaning that you can work anywhere in the UK after obtaining a teaching qualification.
