One of the most challenging parts of having children who go to school is what to do with them when they’re back in your care full-time. Yes, those weeks when the children have been let loose from school and are now raiding your cupboards and vying for attention while you work from your home office.
Before long, you’ll likely be waiting for the day that they’re able to go back to school but that might not be for a while yet – especially during the summer vacation period.
With that in mind, there are plenty of ways to keep your kids engaged and entertained. Whether you’re confined to the home for the day, or you’ve got some time during your lunch break or a day off to go outdoors, it’s worth filling up your daily calendar now.
Here’s everything you can do to keep your kids successfully occupied during the school holidays this year.

Take a picnic at your local park
If it’s a nice day, then it’s definitely worth taking advantage of the local parks. These are great spots that you can visit for free and that doesn’t require you to pay an obscene amount of money in order to satisfy your children’s need for entertainment.
Chances are, you’ll be one of many like-minded parents who have considered doing the same thing on a dry and warm day. To make your trip to the local park more successful, it’s worth whipping up a spread that you and your children can enjoy. It might be a trip whereby you spend the whole day or afternoon in the park.
For others that are time-restricted, it could be taking the picnic to your local park for just your lunch break.
Try out some arts and crafts in the garden
If the weather is staying fairly dry and you don’t have the time or attention to spend time at a local park, then the next best thing is to do some arts and crafts in the garden. Getting outside is always good to provide your children – and yourself – which some fresh air. Arts and crafts are something that most kids will also want to do when they’re bored.

Whether it’s painting with vegetables or their hands and feet, get the paints and colouring books out. It’s a great opportunity to support their creative flows and hopefully contribute to some of that creative skill that they’ll need for later on in life. Despite what career path they may end up falling down, it’s always good to have a creative bone or two in your body.
Go swimming with your little ones
Exercise is an important part of daily life and whether you role model that behavior or not, it’s good to encourage your children to exercise. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be setting up an assault course in your back garden – you don’t want to scar them from exercise completely.
Instead, go easy on them and try out some swimming instead. Swimming is a great opportunity to spend time in water and to get your children used to swimming if they’ve not had much exposure to it in their early years.
Swimming is a fun way to relax and to wipe out your children’s energy levels. If you don’t fancy getting in the water yourself and you’d like to conserve your energy, then it’s worth taking a seat on the side, with a nice cup of coffee.
Take a random trip in the car to a nearby town or city
For those days when you’re really struggling to find things to do, why not go on a little adventure? This is likely one that you’ll want to do when you’ve not got anything on work-wise and therefore you can take the day off to do it.
Taking a random trip in the car to a nearby town or city, or alternatively travelling by train, is a great way to do some much-needed exploring. There’s a lot to discover out there and if you’re someone who loves an adventure, then it’s worth finding what’s available beyond your local town or city itself.
Role-play with a dressing-up box
To get their imaginations running, it’s always worthwhile having a dressing-up box. Whether that’s putting on a show for you or playing with your siblings, role-playing is something that can help them boost their confidence, explore their imagination, and more.
With that being said, you can get a lot of dressing-up materials from local thrift shops and whatever’s available through Facebook Marketplace, for example.
Take them to the cinema
A trip to the cinema is a great way of giving your children some much-needed entertainment while being able to switch off yourself. Whether it’s a new movie you’ve been wanting to watch or it’s one that the kids are desperate to see, who can resist a trip to the cinema with some hot popcorn and fizzy pop?
Make sure you plan ahead and pick what film you want to watch at the right time so that you avoid missing it and getting stuck in traffic.
Try out a new extra-curricular class
Extra-curricular classes and hobbies in general are something that are crucial for your children to have. They need to have interests that go beyond just their favourite electronics and television shows. Try out some classes within your local area, whether that’s sports-based or related to arts and the creative sector.
Get them to help you with the household chores
Finally, if you’re out of ideas and want to trick your children into helping out, make the household chores a fun activity to do. Perhaps they can help clean the kitchen with the help of some crafting cleaning utensils or by playing their favourite music. Kids can be tricked into thinking it’s fun, even if you find it a bore – especially when they’re younger.
Hopefully, with all these suggestions, you’ll be able to keep your children occupied for the most part of the school holidays this year. Make use of the advice above and good luck!
