How To Successfully Declutter Your Home

Spring is fast approaching so now it’s time to dig out the duster, empty all the cupboards and start your spring clean.  But, every spring clean pro, now the top trick to being able to do this properly is to clear the clutter at the same time. No one wants to spend that time for their clutter to only go create a future dust trap for them to deal with in the future.

So whether you need to pop a few bits in a bag or use a company such as sheridan skip hire based in Manchester, being ruthless and clearing the clutter is essential.

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry these helpful tips will have you clutter-free in no time and ready to start embracing your peaceful home once more.

One Room At A Time

Decluttering can be overwhelming. You can find yourself looking around your home and not knowing where to start. The biggest trick is not to think about it as a whole-house declutter and to break it down and focus on clearing one room at a time. This is more manageable and will help you keep focus.

Before you start a room, work out where your ‘clutter hotspots’ are. These should be the areas you focus on initially. Once those hotspots have been dealt with that is the hard part done and the rest of the room in comparison will be a breeze.

Set A Timer

It can be extremely easy to start a job and before you realize it, notice that a few hours or half a day has been lost and not a lot has been achieved. Setting a timer on how long you will focus your full attention on your decluttering mission will keep you focused on and track.

Physically go and set a timer of some sort. This could be a physical timer or a playlist that ends after so long. But, knowing that your time is limited will ensure that your enthusiasm doesn’t dwindle and that you are not allowing yourself to get distracted.

Create A System

When you are going through your belongings it is important to operate within a system. When emptying out a cupboard or chest of draws you want to find a method that works.

Using the method of 3 can be extremely beneficial if you don’t already have a method you use.

It is very simple and very effective. You assess each item into a category.

  • Keep – It gets used daily. In this case, you put it straight away.
  • Keep – used occasionally –  this would relate to sentimental belongings or seasonal items such as your Christmas tree and household decorations.
  • Get rid – In this pile, you are putting items that you will no longer be keeping. If you find it hard to part with items. Ask yourself, when did you use it last. If it wasn’t used within the last 6-12 months and holds no sentimental value, the likelihood is that you no longer need it.

If you can keep to this system you will be well on your way to decluttering your home and a simpler life.
