As the coronavirus pandemic slowly starts to slow down and lockdown measures are gently eased, many of us are beginning to look to a post-pandemic future and new beginnings. So far, 2020 has been quite an interesting one; in ways we could never have imagined. However, we can now start to think about having a reset of our lives and our homes and thinking about how we can work to make the rest of the year a little better.

Keep, Store, Throw
Goa round your home systematically and take a look at every single thing. Categorise them under keep, store or throw – use post-it notes to mark them, if necessary. There may well, of course, be items that you are not sure about. For this, choose the Kon Marie method of decluttering. Made famous by Japanese professional decluttering expert Marie Kondo, this strategy encourages you to look at every item, and if it does not serve a useful purpose or bring you joy, get rid. That pair of boots fashionable in the early ’90s probably does not fall into either, so dump them!
Make sure that anything you do want to throw away is done so responsibly, whether it is a pile of old magazines or a large kitchen appliance. Fridge removal, for example, requires careful planning, so check before you leave it our for the scrap collectors or try taking it to your local landfill site or tip.
Give it a deep clean
Get your Hinch on! Pull out the rubber gloves, dig out the cleaning sprays, and give your house a thorough deep clean from top to bottom. Use this time to do things like giving your carpets a good clean with a carpet cleaner, pulling out appliances to clean behind them, and taking all of the books out of your bookshelf and giving it a good old dusting. While you might think your home is clean, a thorough deep clean will make a massive difference to the way it looks and feels and smells – especially if you have all been confined to the house for a while.
Plan for something new
If you are a homeowner who is thinking about making some changes, now is an excellent time to start planning them. With people having being locked down for almost three months, there will probably be a run on people wanting extensions built, conservatories put up, lofts being boarded out and so on, so use this time to think about what it is you want to do, and perhaps getting some (appropriately social distanced!) quotes. Even if you do not get the work done for a while, having the plans in place gives you time to really narrow down your ideas and save up for them, as well as giving you something to look forward to.
Use this remaining time with restrictions to movement in place to really get your home looking tip-top and making it look great – you might need it after three months with the kids!
