Whether it’s yourself, your partner, or the kids, when muscle pain rears its head it can be surprisingly difficult as a phenomenon to deal with. As for what causes it, there are all sorts of reasons that you might experience muscle pain. It could merely be an acute case of pain caused by a particular situation or event. Maybe a sports injury, for example, or you simply pulled a muscle doing the housework (or kicking a football around as I recently discovered). Alternatively, you might experience chronic muscle pain as the result of another illness, or for psychosomatic reasons which can’t be easily solved. Whatever the cause, however, there are always solutions. Let’s take a look now at some of the most effective means of dealing with muscle pain, without pain killers, no matter who is experiencing it or where in the body it might be.

Rest It

This first piece of advice is undoubtedly the most important of all. If you want your muscle pain to go away as soon as possible, then you will need to make sure that you are resting it as well as you can. Even if it doesn’t seem to hurt more when you move it, doing so might be causing you further damage, and this is the last thing that you want to do. Make sure you don’t do this, and instead let yourself rest as much as possible, at least shortly after the incident which caused it, if there was an incident. Keep it rested when sitting still, and limit your movements overall. This will help hugely in reducing the pain and helping the healing process itself. Don’t sit for too long, and take regular stretches.

Massage It

Something that is always bound to work is to massage the affected area, gently and routinely. You might just want to do this yourself, or have someone like your partner do it. Alternatively, if you want to get back to full fitness as soon as possible, you might decide that massage therapy is the way to go. With the professional touch, your muscle is likely to repair and restore much faster, so this might be your best bet overall. With frequent and proper massage, you will be able to feel your muscle returning to its former state in no time at all.

Use Heat/Cold

You have probably heard that applying heat can help to heal a muscle wound. It’s true, but you want to be careful about the kind of heat you use, and the amount you use. The best solution in most cases is a hot water bottle. Cheap and readily available. You could also try a heat spray or rub. These can be found at pharmacies and tend to be most effective in dealing with the pain of the injury, even if not in actually helping to fix the problem. A nice hot bath or jacuzzi can feel rejuvenating, especially with some essential oils like Rosemary and Eucalyptus, known for their pain relieving properties. Use heat sparingly and sensibly, and you might find your muscle pain reducing fast. Conversely, a cold ice pack can help too, and alternating between the two.

Physiotherapy

Finally, it might be worth gradually starting to try and use the affected muscle. You will want to do this slowly and routinely, and make sure that you don’t overdo it, otherwise you might damage it further, which is the last thing you want. But with persistence, you should find that you can soon use your muscle fully again. If the pain is persisting beyond a few days and not improving, seek advice from your doctor, who can refer you for Physiotherapy or Osteopathy as appropriate.

True. It’s less expensive and less harmful and you’ll be relaxed after having a massage or therapy.

Thanks for the tips! Resting is definitely the most important, not just for muscle pain, but for other injuries as well. I injured my wrist while lifting a water container. It took more than six months to heal, but I rested it in every opportunity I can.

Physiotherapy is a hugely beneficial specialist treatment of injury, disease and disorders. Through physical methods, it helps them to restore function and movement in the area that has been affected.

Just 2 days back, while sprinting in the park, my thigh muscles suddenly got cramps and the pain was tremendous, when I returned home, my son gave me a good massage and I got some relief. But immediately after that, I started climbing stairs and the pain returned. You have very rightly suggested that we must rest our legs in such situations. Then I applied hot water bottle on the affected area, slept soundly and pain was gone when I woke up.
