I am really not green fingured, I try to be – I love plants, the garden and growing fruit and vegetables. But I’m just not very good at it. I have killed so many plants due to over and under watering. Cactuses and succulents are just about OK for me. I have a very nice Aloe Vera plant in my kitchen that likes my sporadic spray bottle watering.
Enter Plantpal to help me. I’ve always wondered about self watering systems, how do they know when to give water to the plant? My indoor big plant I got from IKEA has been suffering of late, I’m always scared of over and under watering, leaving me in between a rock and a hard place! At least I’ve managed to keep it alive this far.
Plantpal works by providing on demand watering that prevents the over and under watering conundrum. It provides water to the roots where it’s needed, and has a moisture detector so you can’t over water. I’ve been using the colourful globes inside and out to test them out. They come in different colours and decorative patterns.
We had the blue, yellow and green pack of 3 Plantpal watering globes. I’ve put one in my IKEA plant (I don’t know the official name!), and two outside to plants that need a lot of watering. As I said, I’m bad at remembering to water, and in the hot weather I think I’ve saved my plants. My indoor IKEA plant has even started growing new shoots, so it’s a win win. They’re great for when you’re going away as they can last up to 2 weeks depending on the plant and conditions, but can be used all year round if you’re forgetful like me. If you’re looking for a gift for plant lovers, this is great.
Tips for use:
- Remember to moisten the wick before use, otherwise the water may drain out too soon
- You have to check on them every now and again and re-fill them
- Use larger 300ml globes for bigger pots up to 23cm
- Use 200ml for pots up to 15cm
- Use 380ml for pots 15-23cm
Plantpal also do a Plantpal watering system to hide inside your plant pot for more discreet watering. Perhaps to use when you are potting up some new bulbs or plants, you fill the reservoir and place in the plant pot before filling up with earth. Then you can re-fill from the top once in place.
