Being a new mum is an amazing experience — but it’s an expensive one too!
It doesn’t matter how great your maternity leave situation is, or how much your partner is earning: babies cost money, and it’s nice to a bit of extra cash rolling in.
That’s where blogging comes in.
If you do it right, blogging can make you a decent bit of additional income, and keep you occupied/sane while you’re at home looking after your new little one.
There are plenty of great online how-to guides available on to start your blog, blogging for profit, and which platform to use. But one of the big decisions that wannabe bloggers have to make is which blog niche to choose — especially if you want to make money, rather than just have a hobby.
In this post, we’ll go through some of the best blog niches for new mums who want to make some extra money. Read on for blogging inspiration.
1. Parenting (AKA Mommy blogs)
Two of the main rules you should follow when you’re picking out a blog niche are:
- It has to be something you’re passionate about (otherwise you’re going to be spending a lot of time writing about something you hate — and trust us, your readers will figure that out)
- It needs to be something you know a lot about — a topic or area that you feel like you’re an expert on, or have a lot of experience in.
That’s why starting a parenting blog (also known as a parent & child blog, or a “mummy” blog) is a great niche idea. You’re writing about something you know a lot about, and your life is centred on.
Even if you’re a total newbie at parenting and you feel like you don’t know anything, you can absolutely write about your new experiences, the chaos of parenting, and the lessons you learn as you go along.
There are all sorts of ways you can make money with this blog niche, from affiliate product recommendations (your favourite baby food, books or skincare products), advertising, or sponsored posts.
2. Frugal living & making money
What do people love to read about? Things that will either a) make them money or b) save them money.
The truth is, whether we’re rich or poor, most of us struggle with spending, saving and making poor financial decisions — and any tips or tricks on this topic tend to be well-received. If you can offer practical advice on frugal living, thrifty shortcuts, tips on how to save money, or even offer your own guidance on how to make money, then you’ll find an audience in this niche.
And the beauty with this topic is that you can go even more niche, and tailor your blog to a specific audience — such as new parents like you, or debt-ridden students, or young families trying to adapt their spending habits.
You can monetise this type of blog by including affiliate links to money-saving guides or products, You can even create your own sellable (for a small cost) monthly budget planners, DIY guides, and foodie recipes.
Whether it’s video games, board games, cards and online gambling, or games of strategy, gaming has carved out a hugely successful blog niche for itself.
So if you’re into gaming, potty about poker or you’ve always had a fascination with gambling, then this is a profitable niche to get into. Plus, you’re spending time doing something you find interesting.
There are a few ways that you can make money in the gaming blog niche: you could review different games (linking to stores and earning money from affiliates), or blog about your own gaming and gambling experiences (you can find a comprehensive casino list to try on Online Casinos). You could also merge your knowledge of gaming and your role as a parent, and write helpful blog posts, like the one I did on child-friendly Minecraft YouTubers. I couldn’t find a list when my son started watching them, so I did my own research and it’s a popular post now.
4. Health & fitness
Health and fitness is a great blog niche to cover — with huge potential to make money.
More often than not, people are striving to achieve a certain health or fitness goal; whether it’s to lose or gain weight, eat better, boost their fitness, run a marathon or get back to their pre-baby weight.
If you can write on this universal topic, then you are appealing to an enormous global audience, which will mean more traffic to your site — which equals more potential for money-making. This will work particularly well for passive income methods such as affiliate link or Pay Per Click (PPC) and Cost Per Impression (CPM) advertising.
If you decide to go for the health and fitness blog niche, try to narrow your focus to make your blog more unique and more targeted. For example, you could base your blog on postpartum fitness, weight loss tips for busy mums, or how to encourage healthiness in your whole family.
Fashion has so much potential as a great blog niche for new mums — and it can be a lot of fun too, if you’re really passionate about it.
You can dig down into a range of different sub-niches, depending on your interests and talents:
- Fashion for kids
- Fashion for mums
- DIY design: sewing and making your own clothes or baby clothes
- Hair & make-up
If you’ve got a distinct style and an eye for fashion, you can easily make an attractive fashion blog that will translate well to social media platforms like Instagram. And with Instagram comes the possibility of big, loyal followings and influencer marketing potential (where you can make big money from product placements, ads, and partnerships).
These five great blog niches have huge potential for new mums wanting to make some extra money. Find a niche that you love, and who knows where your new business venture could take you!
