The minute you get pregnant you will get bombarded with ‘must haves,’ and lots of companies promoting their brand of maternity and baby gear. Although there are some pregnancy freebies to be had, everyone wants a piece of your pregnant purse.
So, what if you had someone older, wiser, someone who’s been there, done that and also been through it with several hundred other women to tell you what that one thing is that you need?
Hi, it’s me! I’m a Mum of three children, and a midwife who’s seen countless women go through pregnancy.
What one thing will help you during your pregnancy?
It’s as simple as that. Really. If you’re newly pregnant for the first time (congratulations by the way), you might be thinking, “I’m not going to be one of those women who’s pregnancy pillow becomes her best friend.”
Just you wait, my friend. Once that bump starts growing, your normal sleep positions just won’t cut it, and the only thing that helps is a big long pillow. You will be that woman who takes up a large proportion of the bed, kicks the covers off and hugs that pillow like it’s the door in the sea in Titanic.
Which pregnancy pillow to buy?
There are so many on the market, and you can pick them up really easily, but which one is best? I’m here to help you out, with my Friends style guide.
The U shaped one
These are good for supporting your legs and for having support in your back too, they also work well as a back support for sitting in bed and in a chair. You can use it like the lady in the picture, or turn it around and have your normal pillow for your head. The bonus about the u shaped pregnancy pillow is that it can double up as a nursing pillow for breastfeeding. Even if you formula feed, they’re a great arm support. I have this type and still use it now.
The Body One
If you have a big bump and like having your legs supported, the body pillow is for you. It gives you a wedge under the bump and a place to rest your leg and head at the same time. It is slightly curved for maximum support, and promotes side lying, the optimal position for pregnancy sleeping. Keep it around afterwards as a floor cushion and for support when you’re breastfeeding. They can also be used for supporting the baby when they’re getting ready to sit up but are still wobbly.
The Bolster Support One
This pillow is a straight long pillow, which moulds to your body for maximum comfort. The bolster pillow supports your head, belly, spine and legs. It is soft to medium. Again, you can use it afterwards in a variety of ways. If you like a big pillow to cuddle, this is the one.
