Qualities of a Nurse That Moms Naturally Develop While Bring up Their Children

Children are a source of joy and enthusiasm in most households. Although they cause outbursts of joy in your heart, taking care of children can be a significant undertaking. As a mom, you can barely break from taking care of your children as most of their functioning depends on you. This means working all day, every day, and other times overnight, even during the holidays.

Among the responsibilities that moms are tasked with include cleaning the child, constantly checking their temperatures when sick, and deciphering what message they may try to pass across in their mumbles. At this point, you have related the role of a mom to that of nurses in healthcare facilities. Here are the nursing qualities that moms naturally develop while taking care of children.

Emotional stability

Nurses spend most of their day and sometimes night attending to patients from different backgrounds with varying medical conditions. Some of these patients might be critically ill and difficult to handle. This may stir up emotions like anger, stress, and frustration.

Being a mom is similar to what nurses may go through because children may do frustrating things due to their tender age. In addition, as a mother, you are responsible for your young one regardless of their physical, emotional, and mental being.

Maintaining calm under intense emotions as a nurse helps you maintain a healthy relationship with your patients; a child throwing tantrums will benefit from your calm response or composed demeanor.

Good organization

Proper organization plays a significant role in the functioning of any healthcare system. As a result, staff members, including nurses, need to organize and plan their activities. Since nurses spend most of their time sourcing information, including diagnostic results, proper documentation should be observed to avoid data loss.

Due to technological advancements, facilities have employed computer systems to facilitate easier record-keeping and tracking. A mom at home needs to plan for different activities, including dental appointments, meal preparation, and after-school activities. Going out for unplanned lunch with friends is hard for a nurse, just like a mom.

Critical thinking

A critical thinker can make sound decisions in moments of uncertainty. Study skills for nurses equip you with skills to make a rational judgment based on a patient’s diagnostic results and recommend proper treatment. Nurses work in fast-paced facilities and need to have this quality as they will be tasked to dress wounds, arrest bleeding and randomly place urinary catheters among other things.

Likewise, a mother places cool clothing on a child with mild fevers and eliminates extra layers of covers. Just like nurses, a mom can identify when a baby is unwell and seek medical attention. This makes critical thinking a quality that moms and nurses practice in their everyday duties.

Empathy

Having a strong sense of empathy as a mother builds invaluable trust in your child and, as a nurse, makes a patient’s experience better. Understanding a patient’s emotional responses to treatment will help build a healthy relationship.

On the other hand, mothers genuinely look after their children and quickly respond to their needs. No mom rejoices when their child is hurting, which should be the case with nurses who care about how their patients feel. While empathy can’t be taught in schools, it is a skill that you can intentionally learn and develop with time.

Flexibility

Part of a nurse’s job involves learning new skills and taking charge of unexpected tasks throughout the day, making flexibility a quality that nurses should have. The day where your only duty was to monitor children in the newborn unit may be the very day where multiple women were in labor.

Moms at home may also need to cut into resting hours when a child obtains an injury when playing outdoors or when the baby develops a high fever late into the night. This calls for both nurses and moms to adapt to the changing events in workplaces and homes. A flexible mom and nurse can easily adjust without feelings of anxiety and stress.

At this point, most mom duties inevitably have a striking resemblance to that of nurses in health care facilities. Whether you are a mom or are considering taking a career in nursing, online courses can help enhance your skills.
