Now that our house renovations are underway I’m having the pleasure of choosing local contractors. I like to keep it local whenever I can, it’s really important to give back to the community we live in. When you’re choosing who is going to provide your birthday cake, or your new conservatory, think carefully about the company or brand you choose. What else can they offer apart from quality, service, affordability? Will they give back to the local community? Here are 7 reasons to go local:

#1 They’re often family run

The local companies are often run by the mum or dad and have their children and relatives all mucking in, making them all truly invested in making it a success and therefore committed to customer satisfaction.

#2 You have more comeback if anything goes wrong, especially if you know where they live!

If it’s Joe Mayfield who lives three streets away they’re going to make sure everything is ship shape for you, otherwise you’ll be bumping into each other in Tesco and it will be really embarrassing all round. They will know you’re more likely to recommend them to others.

#3 You can check their credentials

If they have a website you can check their accreditation, for example if they’re a member of the Federation of Master Builders or Fensa.

#4 You’re helping a local family keep afloat by supporting their business

By going local you know that a family just like yours will be kept financially afloat by you choosing to go with them.

#5 They’re often recommended locally by word of mouth

If they did a good job for your Mum or your friend, you can get see firsthand the quality of workmanship and find out about the service they got.

#6 Local companies often support local initiatives and sports teams

From supporting local gymnastics teams to sponsoring football teams there are local businesses that really go the extra mile, combining their advertising with community initiatives. Albion Windows are sponsoring the Kinetic Academy, which help young people focus and stay out of trouble, making a visible difference to young people in the neighbourhood. It would make a difference to me when choosing a company to work with.

#7 You can see examples of their work locally

They’re not just faceless photos, you can see their work in your local area. From windows and doors to gardens, catering and floral displays, local companies are everywhere.

Use a website like Check a Trade or Rated People to help you make a choice, and don’t forget good old Yellow Pages. Do your research and get several quotes in. Sometimes it’s not just the lowest price who wins the contract, it depends on availability, word of mouth, trust and rapport.
