In case you didn’t know, there is indeed a Grandparent’s Day! Well, we have Mother’s and Father’s day, so why not Grandparents? I am so grateful for both sets of Grandparents to our children, my Mum and Dad help me look after my children 2 days a week so I can work and not give all my money to nursery and after school clubs (I do a combination of all three). My in-laws are always on hand to baby sit and both sets of Grandparents dote on them and are the sort of Grandparents that I’ve always wanted for my children. My own Grandparents are fondly remembered. Grandparent’s Day this year falls on October 2nd, so there’s plenty of time to get planning. Here are some ideas for what you can do for them, or buy for them.
Think about the special things
Think about how they make the everyday special, and how they take care of and build memories with the grandchildren. Make them their own picture or card filled with words that are unique and special to you as a family, like this one available from All great quotes.
Make a photo album or frame
Gather together your favourite photos of your children and moments they’ve shared with their Grandparents. Make a collage, scrapbook or album. Buy a couple of nice frames for those really special pictures. They’ll appreciate having physical pictures they can hold, see and show off to their friends!
Treat them to something special
Grandparents and even Great Grandparents can be so difficult to buy for, they seem to have everything! Think about how they spend their time, what they wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves but something you know they’d enjoy or appreciate. You know them best, but there are sites that can help, like Chums, which is a UK mail order company with over 30 years experience in catering for the over 60s market.
Involve the Children
Even the youngest of mine loves to be involved in choosing or making a gift, and the eldest just needs a little encouragement. As well as helping to choose, they can help with wrapping, writing the card (good writing practice!) and their little faces will be bursting with joy and pride when they present their offering.
Make them a memento
Get the paints out if you dare, and let the children make a hand or footprint canvas for them. You could also let them create their own masterpiece, or for older children, baking, making a friendship bracelet (for Grandma) or paint their own mug for Grandpa. I love this idea I found on Pinterest, making their footprints into Bees and saying ‘From your Grand Babe Bees,’ with their names on. All you need is a canvas, yellow paint, a black marker and some googly eyes – and some feet!
A low maintenance idea is to let them loose on a canvas with lots of colour and glitter, (OK forget I said glitter, you can use it if you want to be hoovering it up forever, but it does lend something extra), but before you do, use masking tape to mark out a word like ‘Love,’ ‘Family,’ ‘Granny,’ or your child/children’s names; whatever you fancy, then when the paint has dried, take off the tape.
