For this week’s linky I thought I’d tell you all about my night at the MAD (Mum and Dad) Blog awards. I wasn’t actually a finalist in any of the categories, myself and Clare from Mumsy Midwife won tickets in the draw so we got to go along. We thought we’d make an event of it and booked a hotel for the two of us. We checked in at the Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensington, a lovely hotel and good value. The awards were being held at the Royal Garden Hotel, not far from where we were staying. We walked round for our hair and make up appointments. We were directed down to the basement where we were offered prosecco or a soft drink while we waited. The Powderpuff girls were ready to transform us for the evening. We both said afterwards that we hadn’t looked this good on our wedding days! My hair was amazing, it was set in pin curls and then teased out in a side sweep of curls.
We went back and slipped on our dresses and then headed back to the other hotel. My dress looks really expensive but it was in fact a steal from TK Maxx at £39.99 – I just need another event to wear it at now, I felt like a movie star or a princess wearing it. Apparently blue is the new black this season, there were a lot of blue dresses to be seen. I loved it and it was really comfy. I put on some of my nails that I got from the KISS event that matched perfectly.
We were greeted and given $100 bill each to ‘gamble’ at the roulette and black jack tables which was great fun! We exchanged them for chips – much more fun than risking real money. There was a photo booth, a glass of champagne to start us off and some canapes.
Then we went through to the large room where the awards were taking place. We were table number 7, along with Vicki from Being Tilly’s Mummy, Franca from A Moment with Franca and Niki from Play and Learn Everyday. The tables were beautifully dressed with candleabra, buckets of wine (!) and the room was softly lit. There were two screens up either side of the stage where you could see people’s tweets appearing live as they used the Madblogawards hashtag – what a clever idea! It was fun seeing our tweets appear.
There was a sumptuous three course menu and with the wine flowing, I proceeded to get quite drunk and take lots of selfies, a few periscope live broadcasts (including one from the toilets – they were massive and had their own sofa) and a cheeky selfie with Helen Lederer, who was hosting the awards.
Helen Lederer was very funny and the awards themselves were lovely, it was great seeing people get recognised for their hard work. Then it was time for more faux gambling, we heard a rumour that the most chips meant you got a years worth of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, that in itself was worth it. The wine at the table ran out and in my drunken wisdom I decided I needed more booze, so I paid £8 for a glass of wine! I should have foraged more. Then there was some dancing before I realised I was in danger of falling over so we hobbled back to our hotel, I think I wanted to take my shoes off but Clare wouldn’t let me so it was a painful walk back before passing out in the hotel. Thank God I didn’t have to check out until 12pm the next day, because I felt it in the morning!
What an amazing night to be part of, I felt so glamorous and it was great to chat and meet all the other bloggers. I hope to go again next year, if so, I’ll try and control myself a bit more.
