Just because you have a health issue doesn’t stop the travelling bug, but you want to ensure you will be well looked after in case the worst happens while you’re away. I am a UK nurse and I also have health problems myself, so I know how it feels to be nervous when you travel. In this post, I will look at what you need to consider when travelling with a known health condition.
Location
Before you go away, you will need to consider where you want to go, bearing in mind how long the flight will be. If you have mobility issues, are at a higher risk of blood clots, or need to have access to the toilet more often, a long-haul flight may not be right for you. You may need travel vaccinations for certain countries which may exacerbate your symptoms. If you want to go to a country with a risk of malaria, the anti-malaria side effects can make you feel ill. The climate may be a great appeal for some places, but high heat and humidity can affect your health, as can extreme cold or dampness. Research their health system, local hospitals and clinics to your hotel and any in-house healthcare provision.
Type of Accommodation
For most hotels and accommodations, you will be able to request, for example, a ground floor room or apartment, or at the very least a working lift! I have found that I needed to consider the whole resort, not just the room. If there is a lot of uneven ground and inclines, it will make my experience worse, as will the room being a long way away from the restaurant. If you can afford it, a hotel with a concierge is wonderful, they will have all the local knowledge and can book anything you need.
Insurance

This is a must for anyone, but especially us spoonies. Many of us may feel uncertain about whether we can obtain suitable travel insurance coverage. Fortunately, there are options available for those seeking travel insurance. While some traditional insurers may pose challenges or offer limited coverage, specialised providers and policies cater specifically to individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.
It’s essential to disclose all relevant information about your health condition when applying for travel insurance to ensure you receive the appropriate coverage. For example, if you have gallstones, it won’t prevent you from travelling, but you must disclose the severity and when your last attack was, plus any medication or treatment you receive. Once you get the right travel insurance with gallstones, you’ll be off creating those unforgettable memories with the security behind you.
Local food and culture
I am a complete foodie, and I love trying the local cuisine when I am away. When we went on our honeymoon to the Dominican Republic, the food was amazing, but we both had a case of Dominican belly or whatever they call it. We were young and healthy then, but a bout of food poisoning, when you’re already vulnerable, can knock you back and ruin your holiday experience. If you need a specific diet or have allergies, check that the country, resort or hotel can accommodate you.
