UK Lockdown: The Kids’ Views

It’s been a wild ride, hasn’t it? Lockdown one we were all in the blitz spirit, lots of walks together, spotting rainbows in windows and communities coming together. Our neighbourhood did a bear hunt, where we all put teddies in our windows for the local children to spot. There was also an art competition and loads took part.

Second lockdown was a short sharp one, and it was a matter of getting through it. I remember going to a toy shop the weekend before it started and people were cramming their trollies full of toys as if it was a race to get the Christmas shopping done. Have they not heard of online shopping?

Now it’s the third lockdown, and this feels like the longest one ever and the bleakest. I know there’s a way out this time but it still feels like a far away dream and the news is always so dismal. But what are our children’s views? I think it does depend on their age and understanding.

I have three children, the eldest is 11 and I think it’s hit him the hardest. He was enjoying some independence with walking to school on his own but that’s all stopped. He also missed the majority of his last year in primary school where they have a lot of fun activities which he didn’t get to do, including an inflatable fun assault course and the prom. He can entertain himself, but it’s mainly been with gaming and screen time.

My next child is 9, and she misses going to school and seeing her friends. She finds virtual school harder than in person, because it’s harder to ask questions and get help. She also misses shopping!

My youngest is 6, and he missed half his reception year at school. I feel it’s set him back a bit, although he is catching up now. He finds it hard to engage in virtual school. He does love lockdown though because there is less school and more time with Mummy. He misses his swimming lessons, his friends and soft play. He doesn’t understand much about the virus, he did ask me once if coronavirus had gone away.

We all enjoyed Christmas together, there was something nice about not having any pressure to go anywhere or see anyone, but we missed our family terribly. We’re looking forward to being able to travel again, in fact we have optimistically booked our August holiday to Spain, hopefully we will be able to go.
