Since restrictions on overseas travel and rules regarding ‘social bubbles’ came into play during the pandemic, UK residents have seen this as the perfect opportunity to explore the beauties of Great Britain for their holidays.
What’s more, we Brits love our beach holidays with 41% of us in 2019 flocking to the coasts of Devon, Kent, and even Yorkshire proving that you don’t have to hop on a plane to get a good taste of sun, sand, and sea.
Planning your trip to the beach yet? Follow our tips below to ensure the best UK beach break yet!
Before setting out
With UK weather being not quite as predictable as Spain or Portugal, it’s always advisable to check the beach forecast in advance. This will provide you with information on when the tides are at their highest, as well as sea temperature and wind speed, and direction.
Knowing whether the tide is out (or in) is a great way of planning your timings – after all, it’s no use if you arrive and the beach is underwater!
Likewise, knowledge of more technical aspects such as wind speeds is perfect for any surfing enthusiasts in the family.
What to wear
It’s a common question you hear in any household before going away – ‘what should I wear?’. Think comfort and practicality. Most clothing retailers will have an array of holiday skirts and slip-on dresses during the spring-summer seasons which are perfect for slipping over your swimming costume.
Other alternatives include loose-fitting shorts and a tank top, or you could even embrace the trending coastal grandmother look with a loose, buttoned-down shirt and cropped trousers.
Lastly, don’t forget your sun hat and glasses – not only will it prevent a day of squinting, but sun hats are also essential for protecting your head from the heat and direct sunlight.
Your beach bag essentials
Sun Cream – It can be easy to become complacent with sun cream application, especially with topping up throughout the day.
Water (and lots of it) – The NHS recommends that we should drink at least 6-8 cups of water a day. Staying hydrated, especially in warm weather, is important for our skin and internal organs as well as preventing serious illnesses such as heat stroke.
Baby powder – Struggling to get rid of that sand in-between your toes? Allow your body to dry a little then apply baby powder to the sandy areas and the sand will come off in a heartbeat!
Towels – Be sure to pack more than one towel. You’ll need one for sitting on as well as another for drying off if you’re going into the sea.
Top Tips
Here are a few little extra tips that you can thank us for later…
Toilet roll – Be prepared for the likelihood of absent loo roll in the public toilets!
Cash – Even though we are living in a digital age, ice cream vans may still only be accepting cash.
A power bank – You may be hard-pressed to find a plug socket on Filey beach, so we recommend packing a charged power bank for your phone.
A windbreaker – This can give you a little relief from any strong sea breezes.
