We’re currently midway through our building and renovation project on our house and of course, budget is a big concern. I don’t want to cut corners, but I do want to make sure we get there on budget. This isn’t our first renovation project, I bought my first property, a two-bedroom flat when I was 25. I did that one up myself, then my husband and I renovated our second and third property together before our current property. Along the way, I’ve learned through my own mistakes and successes, and I’m going to share with you the DIY budget hacks that actually work.
Paint over tiles
I did this one in my flat, I had pink bathroom tiles with a fern motif, and I painted over them in fresh white. The results were amazing, gave it a real lift, and cost a fraction of re-tiling. It also was a lot less messy! You can get special tile paint. You may need more than one coat, but it’s really easy to do.
Floor paint
Again, instead of re-carpeting or spending big bucks on a new wooden floor, try sanding and painting your wooden floorboards. It can make the room seem bigger and brighter instantly.
Upcycle your furniture
If you’ve got a good solid piece of furniture but it’s not your style, give it a lick of paint or use some peel and stick on wall tiles to give it a whole new look. If you’re not sure where to start, Pinterest has so many ideas and how-to articles you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Use Stencils
Make a feature wall or even a feature floor using stencils and paints. My Mum made a beautiful Wisteria feature on her wall, and I’ve seen some brilliant stencil examples. If you’re good at drawing, mark out your art on the wall using pencil first and then paint away.
Make your own plant stands
Instead of forking out for designer plant stands, make your own individual plant stands from materials you most likely have around the house and garage.
Pallet furniture
People are always giving away pallets, especially if you’re on a local area Facebook group. If not, get in touch with a local builder and ask them to give you their used pallets. You can make some really nice garden furniture out of pallets, or how about a bee and bug hotel for the garden, like this one?
Smart no wire lighting
Instead of drilling into the wall or re-wiring, use stick on wall lights. In the kitchen, you can get stick on uplighters for the cabinets, and strip lighting under the plinths for a budget take on luxury kitchens.
These are just a few ways you can make changes that will improve your living environment but not make too much of a dent in your finances. What do you think?
