When you live alone, keeping warm isn’t even a concern. You either wear more clothing or turn the heating up. But, in a family home, it’s a little more complicated. Kids are much more susceptible to cold than adults are, and they need to be kept warm to stay healthy. Heating a house is expensive, so you really need to do as much as possible to prepare your house for the winter months.

Roof Insulation
Most houses have a load of wasted space, right in the attic. If you haven’t filled this area with insulating fiberglass, then you should. As you should remember from science class, as a kid; heat rises. So, without roof insulation, a large percentage of your house’s heat will be lost through the roof.
This isn’t expensive to fix, though. You can do the job entirely by yourself if you can climb into your attic. All you need is a couple of lengths of fibreglass insulation. It will sit between the support beams, which hold up the ceilings. So, measure how much of this space you have, and purchase as little of the insulation as you can. Using a pair of gloves and a face mask, as fibreglass can irritate, roll it out between the gaps. It’s like putting a blanket on your house.

Cavity Wall Insulation
Most houses built in modern times have been done on the cheap. Because of this, a lot of houses have gaps between the outer layer of the house and the inside walls. These are known as cavity walls. All of this space is unusable and inaccessible, making it useless. But, much like in the attic, you can fill these spaces with insulation.
This has to be done with a liquid solution; that will set within the walls. So you can’t really do this yourself. It’s not an expensive job, though and there is government funding available for some. And with the savings you can make on power bills, it’s well worth it.

Windows
Windows with more than one pane are filled with gas, usually Argon. This gas acts as an insulator, by being bad at transferring heat to other gasses. Unfortunately, over time this gas escapes and goes off, reducing its effectiveness. The only way to combat this is to get new windows. Luckily, you can hire a professional to use a heat imaging camera to determine the efficiency of your current windows. When it comes to buying the windows; they’re rated based on their ability to keep heat in, making it nice and easy.
Clever Heating
By being smart with the way that you heat your house, you can save a lot of money. Instead of heating every room; heat rooms like hallways, that are central and connect to other rooms. Then, by leaving doors open, heat will spread throughout the house.
Setup your heating to only be on when you need it. Before you wake up, before you get home from work and before going to bed are all great times to have the heating come on. While you’re asleep, you won’t notice the cold. And when you’re out… that speaks for itself.
It’s all about being conservative and using what you have. You can find professional advice online, to help you optimize your home. This post should give you a place to start, though.
